Recognise this Ludwig SNARE, please..? Last viewed: 2 hours ago

Hi everyone!

I’m looking at an online sale for this Ludwig Snare but the guy can’t say exactly what it is but insists it’s NOT magnetic. I don’t have an aluminium snare so I’m hoping this could be some kind of acrolite variety, maybe?

However, the thing that is troubling me is that it looks as if the lugs aren’t the ones one would expect to see on a Supraphonic; a Standard or an Acrolite and I’m asking, now, did Ludwig do any other aluminium Snares that also had a bead going right round the centre?

I don’t want to pay out for a drum I’ve never heard only to find that it’s steel just like my current snare!

Your Ludwig Acrolite is typically Satin Silver as per your first post... ot later Black coating. They are plentiful in US and are quite affordable. Back in 2012 My son & I were visiting the US & bought one each .. I bought mine from a member here (Thanks Lynn)… & My son organised a purchase from Guitar Shop in Texas who shipped it (at No Charge) to LA. We took off the heads and stuffed them with clothing etc... We then carried them back to Oz as Hand baggage... Only last week I finally got that dirty sock smell out of mine.. Laughing H ]

That’s funny & cool!

My thinking is that the center-beaded snare in the photos must be either steel (in Which case the seller is mistaken about the magnet) or that it’s somehow wood with a plastic chrome wrap, maybe?

The "beaded" Ludwigs with aluminium shells were either Acrolites or Supraphonic's. The "vintage supraphonic's" that were chromed are usually very pitted... Do lots of googling & you will soon learn the difference...

I have googled a LOT and I think that’s what confused me!

Basically, can it be said that everything beaded is aluminium?

Remember, that this has lugs I’ve never seen described on any Acrolite Or supraphonic and it has a Black & White badge. So, my question still stands:

That appears to be one of Ludwig's import shells. I would have thought that it was a steel shell. But if not magnetic, most likely aluminum I'd guess.

Short answer, no.

The Rocker, Rocker II and "S/L" series from the 80's/early 90's were wood shell snare drums (usually 4-ply maple/poplar or just poplar...depended on the year of production) that had a plastic chrome finish wrap.

What this is, is a Ludwig Accent series snare drum from the late 90's/early 2000's. It is an import, and it is a steel shell drum. Not very good sound or quality to it. It was their budget/entry level line to be able to compete with the rest of the name brand imports on the market at the time.

Personally, I'd pass on it.
