I swear to Ghod I think long drum solos, no matter how great the chops are just boring. I'd rather listen to a Steve Gadd groove, or a Joe Morello groove than a thousand chop-fest drum solos. I think people clap during drum solos in hopes that it will end.Don't get mad at me I feel the same way about bass solos...John
I remember hearing that Bill Graham hated the mandatory drum solos that came with rock bands in the day.
He had Iron Butterfly booked into the Fillmore West (or Winterland) and was dreading listening to another lumbering solo.
He hit on a solution, the opening act that night was the Buddy Rich Quartet.
There wasn't a drum solo that night from Iron Butterfly.

No matter the instrument, extended solos are like a party guest that overstays their welcome. All of the greats know when to go home.

Louie does make it look easy, because he's a relaxed player. Mike looks like he's having a stroke because...well....he just tenses up and tries to look intense. Both are good drummers, but as others have said, long solos get to be boring.

Wow I kinda dig this guy! Three things that do it for me: 1) drums that actually sound like drums! 2) a solo that seems actually thought out rather than just a random solo of "hey! look what I can play!" and 3) its a musical composition!
The only other drummer I've seen that has done that was Jack DeJohnnette.
