Ludwig Super Sensitive versus Rogers Dynasonic

Loading...

Hi guys,

Just wondering if someone can tell me - in 2000 words or less :) - how the Ludwig Super-Sensitive snare mechanism compares to the Rogers Dynasonic. They appear to be very similar in construction, and basically the same concept in snare tensioning...just slightly different engineering? Is one better than the other?

I've played a 6 1/2" Super Sensitive since 1977, and it's still my go-to snare...although I realize that the mechanism is awkward to use, it requires a special snare wire assembly, and the drum must be positioned on the stand so that the large snare guards don't interfere with your legs.

I don't know anything about Rogers drums, other than that Dave Clark sure looked cool behind his 5-piece set when I was a beginner!

Thanks in advance for your comments, MB

Hi MB,

You're really comparing apples to oranges here! Two completely different concepts. The Ludwig SS uses snare wires that extend past the shell on both sides, while the Rogers snare wires measure only around 13" end-to-end. While you could certainly use the argument that both drums keep the snare wires under tension at all times, that's pretty much it. Technically, the SS wires loose tension when in the "off" position, while the Rogers wires, by virtue of the snare cradle, keep the wires at the same tension all the time. I really feel that you should easily be able to tell the difference with both mechanisms.

I've owned both ... they are not really all that similar

they are both a pain in the ass when you first come in contact with them... and become very simple once you figure it out.

they both sound amazing when dialed in properly

two quite different animals

The Ludwig SS snares do stay under some degree of tension in the off position, maybe not as much as when they're on, but they don't go completely slack.

I would not trade a Dyna-Sonic for a Supersensitive. I have traded a Black Beauty Supersensitive for a Dyna-Sonic.

You can visit a store and try out a brand new Dyna-Sonic.

If I wasn't clear, this is exactly what I meant. I've had a few SS snare drums and very familiar with how they work. The very nature of the mechanism means that the snare wires loose a bit of tension in the "off" position.

Now, let's see if the OP weighs back in!

If you want to hear what a Dynasonic in all its glory sounds like, check out Louie Bellson's album Thunderbird or Buddy Rich's album Big Swing Face. That's the definitive sound.

And I agree with others, you are comparing apples to oranges. Two totally different snare mechanism concepts. Both are a pain to set up if you don't understand how it works. Both are glorious in their own ways when set up correctly. Excited

Since we are comparing, I am unsure about a couple of snares. The first, Slingerland GK, or Rogers Dynasonic. I had a slingerland and have been doing research on the Rogers. In you guys wise opinion, which has a better sound. I understand the Rogers is very hard to tune. Thanks Bucky

The SS Ludwig and Dyna are nice,..

I tried the .."Birdman" of SS drums in the race. I`ll never forget how stupid sensitive it is and how many sounds you can get.

"Better" is subjective. They each have their own sound. Which sounds better to you is up to your ears.

Rogers Dynasonics are no harder to tune than any other drum. Snare wire setup is a different thing entirely, but once you understand how it works and what the original concept behind it was, it's no more difficult than any other snare drum to set up and use.
