Scored these Ludwig’s on a local BST site.

Hi all, I have been reading and really enjoying this forum for a couple of weeks now, but have not posted until now.

I picked up this set really cheap, thinking I could use some of the hardware and rims on my early 60’s set. The photos on the BST site just showed a heap of drums strewn into pile in The middle of a room.

When I blew up the photos, I could barely make out one of the B&O badges. I knew at that point that I wanted them for parts if nothing else.

After seeing them, I was blown away at how nice this set was. I quickly realized that there was no way I was going to break the set up for parts.

Here’s the thing, I do not really have the room for 2 sets, so I decided to keep the Supra ( it sounds amazing) and the throne, speed king pedal and stands. I want to sell the 4 drums as a set.

I will probably sell them to local music store if there is any interest as I do not have any experience selling this kind of stuff on line.

Can anyone give me an idea what I should expect to sell them for?

I am not trying to get rich off of them, but I would like to get them to someone who would truly enjoy them.

Thanks in advance for your comments and help!

Sizes, serial numbers, shell thickness, condition of seams, scratches and gouges, rusty/corroded metal, all determine value. So, better pics/more info needed?

Also, I think a store will offer much less than you selling and sending, they gotta make a buck....

My guesstimate of value is 500 to 1K, depending on condition.

Thanks BEC, I appreciate the reply.

Sorry about the poor photo quality. I had some trouble sizing them without distorting them.

The tags are all between 1179xxx and 1180xxx. The shells look really good,no scratches or other damage evident. The rims look great, no blistering or pitting in the chrome, same with all of the lugs and mounts. The bass hoop has a couple of small spots where the black paint is scuffed, but otherwise great condition also.

As far as sizes, if I am measuring correctly, the bass is 22”, mounted toms are 12” & 13”, floor Tom is 16”

All of the shells have the granitone paint inside.

Thanks again for any info.

Hello KSchuessler... and Welcome to the forum!

First, I re-posted your pictures to make them easier to view. No use in getting dizzy! Next, I believe you have the Hollywood/Big Beat configuration...22/12/13/16, which was a very popular rock kit! The only difference between the two was the included hardware.

If the drums are as clean and nice as you say, I see no reason that you couldn't get between $800 - $1000. I would not sell them to a music store! They'll give you pennies on the dollar. If you honestly don't want/need them, I'd clean them up, take some good pictures and post them on Craigslist or even this forum. Let us know what happens!

Thanks Mark! Maybe I will try the Craigslist route. I am not a big fan of CL , so many scammers.

I have been trying to figure out which kit I have. What are the differences in the hardware?

Thanks, Kurt

Hi Kurt!

Check this link to see the Ludwig 1971 kit offerings... http://vintagedrumguide.com/ludwig_drumsets_1971.html

What you'll see is that the ONLY difference between the two kits is that the Big Beat used the Atlas hi hat and snare stands. Pure marketing!

If you're going to sell just the drums without the stands, what difference does it make if you know what pieces of hardware came with the drums? The actual drum sizes and configurations in both of sets are identical.

No matter how far you push the envelope, it is still stationery.

Thanks Mark, just the info I was looking for. I wasn’t sure if you meant the drum hardware or the stands. I appreciate your helpful response.

Very true that, without the hardware, it really doesn't matter as to a specific catalog name. Still, it's nice to know what the kit may have been.
