Help identifying this snare

Loading...

Hi all,

Found this for sale online and contacted the seller about sending some more pics of the strainer and air vent to see if I can pinpoint a manufacturer. My initial thought going by the attached pic is a stencil brand with knockoff lugs - hoops look decent. The only other pic of the interior reveals maple re-rings and what looks like a mahogany shell. The finish suggests stencil as well.

Thoughts? Thanks in advance!

The hoops and lugs are identical to those on my Crown and Musketeer snare drum, both of which I believe to be built by Hoshino.

Thanks sir,

Is the shell construction on your instruments also mahogany with maple re-rings? Here's another pic - it's a little difficult to see but it seems that those are the woods on this drum as well.

Here's a picture of the interior of my Musketeer drum. Thin luan shell with some species of "hardwood" for the rings. None of the MIJ drums from this era that I've ever seen used maple for the rings.

My Crown drum is identical in construction and hardware to the Musketeer.

I honestly don't know! I obtain all my MIJ snare drums because they look cool. Most of them sound so-so. I do have an early 70's 10-lug Revelle that sounds good, though!

Haha, I get it! I really love the finish on that Crown snare you posted above. I have a 5" Star with 8 Slingly style lugs and no re-rings that sounds really good and I've found myself using it a lot this summer so far. It has a cool compound strainer design that I think held over into the onset of the Tama brand.

This snare I'm asking about is actually almost identical in finish to my Star, which is kinda holding me back. It's only $50 (what I also paid for the Star), and I thought the difference in shell construction might yield a different tone. The seller hasn't sent additional pics of the strainer yet either, and I'd want to see that before I made an offer.

Thanks everyone for the great info - cheers!
