Slingerland 5 ply

Loading...

A quick question: when did Slingerland start first offering 5 ply shells? I thought it was 1978 or 1979? I noticed a set of concert toms on eBay with S/N's as low as 244xxx (black/silver Niles badge), which "seem" to put the manufacture like '77 (based on the "timeline")?? I own a Super Rock #51N (3 ply with reinforced rings, black/silver Niles badge) with S/N's from 217xxx to 225xxx. I always assumed that set was '75 or '76, based on the S/N and the years that particular outfit was made. Was the Super Rock Kit made in 1977?? I didn't think it was... I always wondered about the 5 ply, and thought I'd ask the experts!

Thanks!

Slingerland was only offering their 5-ply shell for the TDR marching drums first, in 1972. It wasn't until around 1976, or maybe just a bit earlier, that they began offering these shells with kit outfits.

According to Dr CJ Wenk the 5-ply shell was introduced in '72. It was used on TDR marching snares and appeared on orchestra and kit snares. It was also available as an option for toms and bass drums from '72 through '78. In '79 it became the default shell and the 3-ply shell became an option.

Someone on here also mentioned that the smaller concert Tom's were only available in 5ply.

I have the "pop" outfit from about 1972 with concert Tom's in 3 ply and the bass drum is 5 ply.
