Ludwig snare

Loading...

Ludwig (I'm pretty sure this is Ludwig) snare: Inside the shell there is a date of May 16, 1960. Someone must have turned it into a tom because five of the 2” lugs and nuts are missing. Does anyone have those available?

I had someone tell me this is a Ludwig “Downbeat” model piccolo snare drum. I haven't been able to confirm that though.

I would definitely agree with the downbeat guess based on the duco finish, rotated lugs, and depth. Bring that baby back to life!

Yes, I think Dw91290 might have used a 6 lug 3x13 Jazz Combo picture to illustrate an 8 lug 4x14 Downbeat. But it is sometimes hard to count the lugs in images from certain angles.

As far as the original post goes...is the shell 14" diameter and 4" deep with 8 places for lugs? If so then Downbeat. If the shell is 13" diameter and 3" deep with 6 places for lugs, then Jazz Combo. Two different models, both with those "sideways" lugs.

From what I see in the first pic it is a Jazz Combo and the 5 sideways lugs are sitting off to the left of the shell. Further off to the left there seems to be a strainer still connected to snare wires but that's not the strainer which goes with a 1960 Jazz Combo.

Of course ten lugs would be the Las Vegas model. I`m having trouble putting that throw-off on any of them.

It`s a drum,.....Hit It !!

Thanks OddBall. I forgot about the Las Vegas model. It only seems to appear in the 1960 Ludwig catalog and it looks like a proof reading error in the text where it says "six" horizontal lugs. The photo shows a snare with at least eight.

I've never seen a Las Vegas in the flesh, so I didn't know the number of lugs. Now that I've done a search I'm finding the number of lugs on snares which sellers and owners claim are the Las Vegas model are sometimes 6. Now I'm confused...or they are..or we all are.

Another example where somebody says 6 lugs: http://www.billyrhythm.com/drums/snares/bebop/

Meanwhile, over here the claim is that Ludwig mixed up the Downbeat image and the Last Vegas image, rather than the text itself.

If so that would leave the Las Vegas as 6 lug.

So somebody who has one of these or knows from first hand experience, how many lugs does the Las Vegas have?

Did any of you have these lugs and nuts for sale?

Sorry, this drum has 6 lugs. One is mounted on the shell. It's the rods and nuts I need. Needing 6 of each. Thank you, Ron

I (gkrk) posted the DFO note about the Ludwig catalog mix up back in 2013. Pretty sure I'm correct about the image switch. Interesting that this has finally garnered some attention!!

Thanks for spotting it and writing it up where I could find it. But 5 years is quick to get noticed. I'm still amazed by the number of people who don't seem to know what Hugo Pinksterboer carefully documented about cymbals in his 1992 work The Cymbal Book. :D

Meanwhile back to this particular shell. I presume it is 13" in diameter. Is it 3" deep (Jazz Combo) or 4" deep (Las Vegas)? You measure the shell depth on its own without rims in place, so while it is disassembled we can sort that out. You might need different length tension rods depending on whether the shell is 3" deep or 4" deep. I've got a Jazz Combo so if yours is 3" deep I can pull a t-rod and tell you the length you need. Geometry suggests that if it is 4" deep shell you need the t-rods used for the Downbeat snare (same 4" depth), but I haven't got one of those to check. I don't particularly want to detune my snare, so I'll await confirmation about the depth.
