Gene Krupa playing a Dynasonic?

Just saw a YouTube video (music with a slideshow) of Gene Krupa's "Drum Boogie" from 1959. At 7:20 or so into the video, there's a picture of him playing his kit in what looks like Yankee Stadium. I'm sure the picture was more recent than 1959, but it looks like his snare is a Dynasonic, with the black stripe clock face strainer. Can anyone else see that? Never would have thought....

I would have included a link, but I'm kinda clumsy in that area.

Actually, I think the whole kit is Rogers....maybe he's sitting in on Buddy's kit, with that tall seat-case.Mind Blowi

Yes, that's a Rogers kit with a Dynasonic! Gene was always faithful to Slingerland, so my educated guess is that it's not his kit. As suggested above, it could be Buddy's kit. Maybe TommyP would know?

Hey Mark!/8upwuthit!

Actually ... it was Louis Bellson's set! .. and .. it took place at Dodger Stadium. There is video that shows what this was all about, and I have seen it many times. I believe it was GK ... Louis Bellson ... and Shelly Manne. Would have to research to be sure .. but .. definitely Louis' Rogers set, hence the Dynasonic! Here's a pic I have in my collection from that performance/rehearsal!

It was indeed GK, Louis Bellson, and Shelly Manne. Dodgers Stadium, 1962. Here's the YT link to the performance ... [ame="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FF-X7vubC4U"]Drum Battle - Gene Krupa, Louis Bellson, Shelly Manne - YouTube[/ame] ENJOY!!!

Well, I was wrong about the stadium, but right about the drums! Laughing H

Tommyp!

I knew you would have the answer! As for Louie's Dynasonic, it sure looks thinner than a 5", almost like a 4.5" x 14". Is it just an illusion?

Good eye Mark!

NOT just an illusion! LB had Rogers build him more than a few "experimental" custom models that were NOT available to the public. This is one of 'em! It is indeed a 4X14 wood Dynasonic .. and .. LB also had a 4X14 "Powertone" built too, but with a Sta-Tite strainer as the standard strainer was too tall for a 4" drum. One of our esteemed Rogers collectors/members has LB's drum! Based on his specs, I had one built to the EXACT layout as LB's by Joe Montineri. I have gigged it numerous times! Kinda like a "Powertone" piccolo if you will. Here's a couple pics of mine ... and perhaps Powertone will chime in with his!

I have a very clear photo of Gene playing a genuine Gladstone snare in a recording studio. He never used it live as far as I know.
