It was called the Pro Beat sometime in the early 70's, before that, I don't know. I had that kit with the b/o pointy badges, date stamp inside was 1971 or 1972 I think.

Thanks! Has anyone ever seen a 60's kit in a Pro Beat Config catalogued anywhere or would that have been a special order? I rarely see Keystone 24 Kicks and 18 inch Floors

18" floors were available. They came as one of the floor toms in the Blue Note setups. The 14"x24" bass drums were also listed as a size available in a Classic bass drum. So, certainly available at least in special order.

There were gaps of time between catalogs, usually at least two years, sometimes 3 or 4 years. The Pro Beat first shows up in the '71 catalog which probably came out in 1970 but that outfit isn't in the '67 catalog (which was probably put out sometime in late '66) so there is a pretty good gap there during which a LOT of production changes were taking place. So there may have been a flyer or a new products catalog put out at some point prior to 1970 announcing the Pro Beat configuration. Bigger drums were coming into vogue around that time so they may have decided to do an outfit in those sizes right around the end of the decade. Given the lead time to put an all new catalog together (and the '71 catalog was pretty much all new as far as the photos went) the concept of the Pro-Beat must have come about at some point in the late 60's to be included. It was pictured in the new ("bowling ball")version of Oyster Blue that came out around 1969. Badges changed from keystone to B/O around this same time frame too. It would be a very early example but it wouldn't be impossible...not that it is any less of a drum set if someone ordered it that way prior to it being included in the catalog as an "outfit". Catalog sets were just suggestions...drummers could customize those configurations however they wanted.

Yet another...."I don't see it in a catalog, so how can it be a real drum set"? thread. It was a real and complete drum set for the original owner. I will save my usual responses to such a silly topic, and just laugh about it being of concern to anyone.
