Mystery Drums - ID Help?

Loading...

Hi all - new to the joint, so be gentle with me.

I have a Craigslist score I'm trying to identify. My expertise is severely limited, so I'm hoping this forum can prevail.

5-piece kit, 22" kick, 12/13/16" toms, 14" snare.

Mahogany-looking wraps, possibly mahogany plys as well.

No badges of any kind on the outside, no stamps inside.

The kick has a Premier head on the front, but I've never seen no-badge Premiers.
All I have to go on is the hardware, which I realize is no guarantee.

Lugs:

Tom mount:

So. Thoughts? Observations? Lost cause?

More than likely a Star or Pearl 60s-70s stencil kit. Worth maybe 250, if 100% complete, with all stands and cymbals. Other than that, make an offer for what you are comfortable with. Look at the shells of all drums, if they are thick luan, they are definitely stencils.

I don't think these are that old, unless someone has done some upgrades to them.

Notice the gaskets under the tom mount/lugs? That's a more recent thing especially in

import kits.

Also, the tom mount looks to me like a new drumbuilder.com type piece.

Yes?

I went out to drumbuilder and looked at their mounts - nothing matched exactly, although some looked similar. The little opposing parabolas say late-60s/early-70s cosmetics to me.

I couldn't ID luan to save my life, but the plys don't meet in a line perpendicular to the bearing edge - rather, it's at a slight angle.

Oh, and the kick has wood hoops.

Sounds like a luan shell. running angular, kinda thick and reddish in hue? Now, there was acompany, HRK Trak Drums, that showed up late in the game, 80s, and they used Pearl stuff with a gasket under the lugs, I just bought one and it in paint right now, getting a new glitter job. This 16X floor tom had 8 lugs as well.

I dunno... I suppose it could be "reddish". Looks more "brown" to me though. This floor tom only has 6 lugs, btw.

This is more of an intellectual exercise than anything else - I already bought them (grand total: $40). Came with a cheap hat stand, kick pedal, kick tom mount, and a set of Zildjian Top and Bottom Rock hats. I'm ahead before I begin.

Sumo DudeClapping Happy2Eye Ball I'd say. How do they sound? I mean for 40 bucks, you can't have a bad sound....

WAY!!!!!!!! If you'd like to donate some of the cheap hardware, my "kids" could use it. I rescue kits and donate them to less fortunate, very talented kids that have no other means to continue on learning the craft.

Can't tell the shell species...we need a shot of an entire drum, not just a closeup. Maybe a shot of the shell interior, too.

I agree, the hardware appears to be generic, could be anywhere from 80's-contemporary.

I spent some serious time a month ago looking at the new student model brands and their various lug-mount-hoop-spur variations.3 or 4 new lug designs,5,6 and 8 lug drums,6,8 and 10 lug basses,3/4 and 7/8 tube mounts or 10 1/2 mm L-rod.These have got to be coming from mainland China or other asian country-maybe Malaysia or Korea? Not common to see a varnished luan set-too labor intensive and hard to grain match.Mostly older marching drums or the occasional Premier or Slingerland.A full picture with stands would facilitate I.D.-ing.

Look at the Gammon drums on Ebay-very similar lug design.
