Spray-on head texture

Loading...

I know somebody made it back in the day, I remember seeing a can of it.

Seemed like a useful thing back when we were poor & couldn't afford new heads.

There was a post about this stuff a while ago either here or over at the DFO. Someone mentioned a modern textured spray paint (I think it was a Rustoleum product) that came in white and sounded like it might be a suitable substitute.

I wouldn't go the Rustoleum route.......it flakes off in no time. (There's a few Youtube vids on the subject).

BTW, Ruffkote back in the day wasn't much better.......heads are so cheap these days (for your basic texture coated head anyway) why would anyone bother?

My Ruff-Kote story is this:

I've always been that kid who took care of his stuff, so when I got my first kit (a Tempro), I was meticulous about taking care of it. However, my young mind couldn't accept the fact that drumheads are going to incur some damage over time.

The nearest city with a music store, to where I grew up, was 50 miles away and my parents only went there about once a month.

One day, while playing my blue sparkle beauties, a piece of the head's coating chipped off (cheap heads, obviously). I thought I had "broken" the drum. I was so distraught....beside myself, actually!

Fortunately, there was one other kid in town who played drums in his family's band and he put me onto getting a can of Ruff-Kote....which I presume was cheaper than just buying a new drumhead(?) -must have been, right? So, when my parents made the trip to the city, I went with them and got a can.

I came home and excitedly sprayed the stuff on....painfully waited for it to dry....put the head back on the drum...tuned it up....hit the drum....and watched as big flakes of Ruff-Kote broke off! I repeated this process time and time again. I think I was keeping the Ruff-Kore company in business for that entire year!

Eventually, I learned.
