Woody Herman drummer - REMO Drums

Loading...

Hi all,

My first drum set at age 13 was a white Remo Acousticon kit that, my father was told at the garage sale he bought them from, had belonged to the drummer for the Woody Herman Orchestra. In fact it was 1/2 of a double kick kit; my father only bought the one kick, a 16" FT and 12 & 13" rack toms.

My question is, do any of you know who said drummer may have been? I do believe the pedigree because my dad also bought at that same sale a powered mixer which had "WOODY HERMAN ORCHESTRA" painted upon its road case. My guess is Jeff Hamilton given his Remo affiliation but I can't find photos of him using two bass drums, and I think his Woody Herman gig was before Remo came out with these drums.

Louie Bellson was an Acousticon man, double bass drummer, but I don't remember if he played with Woody Herman

Looks like he has in the past:

Remo acousticon wasn't all that great of a drum material.

Basically cardboard and glue.

From pgm554

Seems though if they belonged to Louie Bellson the seller would have just said that... this is more like describing Buddy Rich as Tommy Dorsey's drummer! But who knows, this does make the most logical sense.

For what it's worth, the drums were bought in NE Ohio outside of Cleveland.
