Roger Wood Dynasonic Natural Finish

Loading...

Hey guys,

So I came across a cool piece for my collection while doing repairs for an elementary school. Its a 5 1/2 X 14 wood dynasonic serial #14172. I can't find any pictures or info on natural wood dynasonics so I'm starting to question if its legit. Either way I am excited to fix it up and play it. I am in the middle of doing some repairs on it because somebody committed crimes against the drum gods. they drilled 4 holes in it for another strainer and butt. the fourth hole seemed like it had no use at all. I have filled them all already. If anyone has any info about the possible date for this drum or if its a legit dynasonic I would love to know. Thanks for the help in advance!

First two pictures are before I started working on it.

Outside of a Dyna can be stripped of wrap and sanded to natural coloring. But stripping the interior this clean seems like an excessive amount of work, and really serves no purpose.

Where is the badge mounted in relation to the throwoff and the muffler?

I vote for NOT A DYNA.

I don’t believe the inside of the dynasonic was stripped at all. If it’s from the time I’m thinking there wouldn’t be any Grey or “black” coating inside the shell. The badge was mounted one lug over from the throw off just like all the others I see online. I know the outside can be stripped but it has a very well done clear coat over the wood and it looks factory. I just don’t know if those exist.

I have seen a natural shell Dynasonic, but it was some years ago. I believe it was sold by Steve Maxwell. I am assuming a natural finish could be special ordered, but not a catalogue offering. The interior would also be finished in a clear lacquer.

I suppose yours could be original since you sourced it from a school where it has obviously resided for a few decades. It could have had the wrap removed and refinished, but I agree that the finish looks like it could also be factory. Was the grommet on the dyna badge unmolested before you removed it? (I see some marks on the inside shot that appears that the grommet was removed, but don’t know if that was there originally or from when you removed the grommet.). Was the script badge and nails also unmolested? If they appeared to have been removed at some point, then you have your answer.

Better photos in it’s original as found condition could also yield some clues.

I can't imagine a true factory natural Dyna would have an outer ply with a horizontal splice the way this shell does. If this is a Dyna, I think it was originally wrapped.

I dont have a clue about what finishes Rogers put out. To me it has under gone a few mods which need putting right. All holes need to be dowelled none of that filler garbage. Could be re wrapped in marine pearl and plenty of clear laquer on the inside. Im sure all fitted up your drum whether the wrap was removed or not will look like a stunning dyna snare drum. Im sure the Rogers experts will be chiming in soon so id wait for their opinions if i were you. How much did it cost you.

Well, they weren't always vintage, desired, and valuable. It was not a natural natural. But I would suggest, as have others... dowel rather than plasti-wood filler. 1968.

Oh what a horrendous crime against a fine instrument. Oh the humanity! This is definitely an example for the "What-were-you-thinking" department. I have a guess as to what happened here...

At some point, a student drummer in this school said, "Hey guys, we can take this old useless snare and make it sound good again." First we strip off that old-fashioned wrap and let the shell sing like a modern drum, then we sand down that interior coating which is muffling the resonance, then we put on a modern strainer and butt end. Voila' Now we have a great sounding snare.

This Dyna is not unsalvageable, but after plugging the holes, you'll need an entire COB Dyna just for parts (Strainer, butt end, hoops, tone control, snare frame). Is it worthwhile? Sure. I think it's a great project.

Keep us updated.

Thanks for all the replies so far! I am gunna try and answer all the questions.

The gromet was unmolested when I got it. Just took it out to do she’ll work. The script badge, Strainer, butt, bridge, and hoops all needed to be acquired. I actually ended up getting a COB big R dynasonic from another school and Took the parts from there!

I might go dowel but I have heard some good perks to plastic wood as it acts a lot like real wood in not only what you can do to it but also how it reacts to weather and how it vibrates with the shell. But I’m open to either.

I paid a whopping $0 for it haha I actually got paid to take it away.

Gromet question: The original one is salvageable but it would feel better to me putting in a new one so it’s a snug fit garruntee and from experience bending that metal back and forth one more time might just make its snap. Suggestions? Places I could get a replacement?

My thoughts are that this is a legitimate Dynasonic wood shell. Verify that there is virtually no snare bed. Drilling for all hardware looks correct. Why they would choose to go with the Gretsch Lightning strainer and one-hole butt seems odd, considering that the Swivo strainer and die-cast butt were better! As to the outer ply, this is in keeping with what Rogers was using in the late 60's and early 70's. Why use furniture-grade outer plies if the shell was going to be wrapped? Attached are pictures of Rogers shells from my collection. The shell kit is from the early 68-69 Fullerton era and the 12x15 tom shell is a 9/72 era shell...and the one I converted to a floor tom. Lovely exterior maple plies! LoLoLoLo
