Seventies 5 ply Rogers

Loading...

The first snare I ever owned was a Dynasonic (long gone) and that is way I am interested in Rogers lately. There is a set for sale near me from the seventies for $450.00 firm. They are a 5 piece made in USA 14" snare 13" and 14" toms 16" FT and 20" kick all in black gloss. They are 5 ply concert toms. This is all of the info that I have gathered from the seller so far. The interior is raw wood and they are in very good condition. Would this be a good first project kit for me? I would want to add lugs and rims to the drums. Are the bearing edges usually cut on these drums or would that need to be done also?

Sounds like a good deal, especially if the snare is something special. I thought all those drums had the grayish interior, so I'm not sure about them. I also don't know about the bottom edges. Hardware to finish them up will add up. . are they memrilock hardware?

I am not sure about the snare or the hardware. I am trusting the people on the forum to let me know what to look for. I would plan on selling the kit when finished just to break even in the end. I just want to get my feet wet. I am handy enough with tools to accomplish, with good results, most things I tackle.

Thanks for the reply.

Ludlover, how much work (and money) do you want to put into this drumset? That's the key. If the whole idea is to have fun with finding the correct parts, then, getting into the rebuilding of this kit, I can see that being fun. Then the price should not be a big hurdle. (I'm wondering what Rogers badge is on this set?)

(I have no pictures of this drumset, I'm only going by the thread info)

$450 is high for a 70's Rogers kit with concert toms, for me. It's also a high price considering the time and parts you will need to make the conversion. After the conversion, what would be the value of this drumset if you wanted to resell it?

I love Rogers, too, they made great stuff! The drag part (if you want to buy Rogers) the cat is out of the bag, Rogers are no longer cheap on ebay/craig'slist/ or your local music store. Still, and this is what I am also going through, it might be better to wait for the right kit/price for you. Again, unless, you are more into the project than the actual drums.

[COLOR="DarkRed"]Natural interior shells are the XP8 shells which Plough and I had a 'spirited' discussion about in another Rogers thread. Those were the last series of Rogers shells. A significant change from their grey-interiored thin-ply, reringed shells. Some Rogers folks like 'em, some don't.

The kit should have the Big R badge, then...as opposed to the Script badge. And the hardware should be Memrilock, not Swivomatic.

(Memrilock is the hardware with the big tube arms and thick FT legs. Swivo is the stuff with the ball-joint, hexagonal arms and hex legs.) See if all the hardware is there....INCLUDING all the Memory Locks themselves ON the tubes/legs...because a missing tom arm, bass spur, or FT leg will not be all that cheap to find a replacement for. The diameters of those were NOT standard/matching the diameters of any other company.....

But $450 for a kit with snare is a good deal. The snare is worth about $200-250 alone. Is it a metal snare ? if so, make sure it has the complete snare assembly on the bottom....many have had them removed. if it is missing this, the snare is only worth about $100-25.

Lugs to finish off the toms would run about $3-5/ea on eFlay. They would be the Beavertail style lugs you'd want. The low end price is for the 70's variety, which were thinner-walled and springless. the $5 gets you into the pre-CA variety, which were heavier and had springs. they look identical, however.

I wouldn't suggest bothering with getting original Rogers hoops for the resonant sides....just go with generics. $10-15/ea.

Am not sure if Rogers edged their bottoms or not...All in all, it doesn't sound like a bad deal.....although I gotta believe that that bass drum may end up being a 22", not a 20" (given those tom sizes).

Super B, Jaye and Ploughman thanks for the advie and information. I will save the info in a word ducument for future reference. I think I will wait and see if the set stays on CL for a while. If it does I will try to get them cheaper. He did say the were the big R but I forgot to mention it.
