Rack tom choke issue

Rack tom choke issue

I just picked up a 68 ludwig club date kit it sounds great. But the 12" rack tom is choked so badly on snare stand or rail. What should I do to fix this? I've seen where others say a snare basket fixes it but mine didnt seem to make a difference. Is there a certain snare stand that will make this better? Or is there a ludwig mounting system that I can upgrade the kit with that will make it resonate more?

Thanks for any suggestions. It's really frustrating to have such great sounding drums be hindered by hardware.

I would try either Little Bootyshakers or a Gauger Flex Frame. The Bootyshakers are little pieces of foam that you stick on the 3 arms of your snare stand, and they disconnect and isolate the drum from the stand which gives a lot more sustain. The Gauger Flex Frame is a metal ring that has 3 plastic clips on it. You clip this ring on to the bottom rim of the drum and grip the snare stand to the ring instead of the rim. It increases sustain just like the Bootyshakers, but costs a good amount more. I’ll link some videos of both products. The Bootyshakers retail for $19.99, while the Gauger is at $37.95. Just to warn you ahead of time, the tom in the Haiger video is tuned absolutely horribly!

I use the Little Booty Shakers on my snare/tom stand. It really opens the drum up!

I had the same issue with the rail mount on my previous Club Date set.

Are your head rings touching the shell ? A tight fit head will choke it right up.

This is a great solution that lets you dial in a good resonant sound. This guy designed the Atlas hardware for Ludwig and eventually left to start his own company. His drums have been getting rave reviews as well. It's worth looking at since you don't have to drill holes.

I suppose if you got five minutes between each note, isolators can help a lot. They do work.

Just an idea- use a RIMS mount (plenty of off brands all over ebay) and mpount it to the bottom rim. Move the original mount to the RIMS and go. If it's a clip mount, remove the entire plate from the shell first, and go with a stud mount.

But if a snare basket is still choking it up (more than holding it by the rim out in the air) that sounds odd. Perhaps the tight heads as mentioned earlier is it, but my friends old Gretsch kit has wicked tight heads on the 12 and on the clip it's dead; holing by the rim it sings out (night and day difference), despite the tight heads...

INDE drum is awesome, and you know you're getting top notch quality.

Josh Allen is really at the forefront of engineering in the drum world right now.

He's also a great guy and communicated with me himself when i emailed them to ask

about their snare throw off and butt plate. But now Ludwig came out with the P-88 and both

the throw and butt will accommodate most, if not all vintage and modern Ludwig snares that

don't have the P-88 installed.

Thanks for informing me about Booty Shakers. I just ordered a set of the little ones for the snare stand on which I mount my rack toms. Jump For Joy
