Rogers Celebrity WMP

Loading...

I purchased this Rogers drum set last summer from its original owner who said he purchased it in 1971. Based on the paper tags, hardware, and interior finish, I believe the kit was manufactured in the late '60s (would love to hear opinions from the experts here). The drums were sold to me in pristine condition, and all I did was tune them up and start playing them when I got them home.

One of the knobby cymbal holders was missing when I got the kit, so I ordered a reproduction from Steve Maxwell. The bass drum pedal had also been replaced, and I was fortunate to be able to source a period correct pedal from Dave's Drum Shop in Ottawa. I would have liked to have seen a Dyna-Sonic snare with the kit, but the PowerTone is a nice piece all on its own.

Everything else was there including swan-leg cymbal, hi-hat, and snare stands. The wrap on the drums has yellowed a bit but is otherwise in excellent condition.

What a beautiful Celebrity kit! I had the same, but in silver sparkle. I'm sure our moderator, Tommyp, will chime in on this one!

Thanks for the positive comments!

On a side note, I'm so happy to have found this forum -- it contains tremendous information and really helpful folks. I've learned lots about my Rogers drums and find all of the subtle nuances that unfolded over the years of production to be really fascinating.

Cheers!

Welcome to the forum.

Super nice kit!

The original owner's dating is probably accurate for the purchase, but it is quite possible the kit was assembled in 1970 and sold in 1971. The latest version of the labels, which says PowerTone and has a serial number of 20672, would date the set to 1970. The borderless tags were used very early in the Fullerton era and probably in 1969. The others were an attempt to use up labels for models that had been discontinued. I have a similar set that I date to 1969 because one drum has a borderless tag and the others the crossed-out/typed-in Cleveland labels.

The use of star washers, if present on the mounts and sometimes to mount the lugs, also dates it to the 1970 era.

Now we will wait for corrections by TommyP, the Ploughman and others. ;)

Can't add much to what you wrote Dan ... sounds like you're right in there to me! Jack/Ploughman may have an additional comment or two as well I'm sure. He really has the dating down to just about infallible on Rogers drums! Otherwise ...

rstange1: BEAUTIFUL set of Rogers Celebrity's in WMP! I have a set of 1965 Rogers "Buddy Rich Celebrity's" in WMP with full/complete hardware, and have been gigging them for the past 15 years! I took them "off line" and out of the "gig zone" two years ago as I returned to my 1967/68 FIbes Buddy Rich's in COF .. but .. the Rogers are waiting, and will be back out there! I'll attach a few pics for you ... hopefully you might enjoy! :)

Enjoy indeed -- those are stunning! Your opening photo with the black background is a cut above what I'm used to seeing in drum brochures.
