Replacement wires for Jazz and Pioneer

Loading...

Hi Mark

What is also interesting is the length of the different wires, example: I have a pack of puresound wires 14” 16 strand, the over all length is 13 1/4

Others I have from different manufacturers measure 13 1/8, 13 1/2 and 13 all on different 14” snares.

Some are long enough to sit over the bearing edge others don’t (they are inside the bearing edge, floating on the reso head).

Which brings up the question should they be long enough to sit over or exceed the bearing edge or does it matter ?

There may be some controversy here, with lots of opinions! Personally, and sonically, I've found that wires that don't touch the bearing edge to be the best. That's usually 95+ % of wires out there.

Here's a good example of what I just referred to in the above post. This is a picture of my "tribute" Ludwig snare drum, wrapped in Citrus Mod. I properly centered the stock Ludwig "script logo" wires and you can see that the end plates fall inside of the snare bed and bearing edge area. These stock Ludwig wires are the same MIT wires you can get for cheap at DFD!

I’m going to TRS Drums on Tuesday so I’ll see what wires Seppo has in stock, he is a custom drum builder here in Ontario.

P.S. nice snare by the way !!

whorwood - Just as a point of information... snares that are long enough to extend beyond the bearing edges are always associated with special snare mechanisms that allow the snares to be raised and lowered from both sides of the drum at the same time. Super-sensitives and the like do not have snare beds usually because they aren't needed. The snares make contact clear across the head. For your drum (as idrum4fun told you,) you'll want a set of snares that sit between the bearing edges.

John

Too many great drums to list here!
