Favorite Bass Drum sound/recording?

Loading...

Alright, gonna get into your ears a bit. What are some of your favorite recorded BD sounds, and why? Also, how do you think they got that sound?

I'll start off with the Stones' Honky Tonk Women. I freakin' love that BD! No idea about what kind of mic(s) were used or where the were placed, but it sounds like Charlie might've tuned the heads just tight enough to get the wrinkles out, and left the drum more or less wide open. Totally inspired me to do the same all these years, and with the right heads it's awesome! My 20" Birch Sonor 3000 from the early 90's has been tuned this way its whole life, and that sucker will fill any small or medium size room up, and records beautifully.

Let's get some BD input, then maybe move on to snares?

I like the sound of this little Ludwig Jazzette kit Alphonse Mouzon is playing. Even though he has the front head off, he gets a really big, clear, articulate sound from it....plus, I am a Jazzette freak!

Joe Morello's sound on the studio recording of "Take Five". Good ambient room sound, with a nice, dry "boom".

John Bonham, Since I've Been Loving You, even with the Squeak King. His drums sound fat and full on that one. This was the first song recorded for LZ3 in mid-1970, which is about the same time he received the green sparkle kit from Ludwig. So it's either one of the last songs recorded with the maple kit, or the first recorded with the green sparkles.

Just thought of another one: Bonzo's Montreaux, from the Coda album, which is a compilation from various other albums. You can hear the squeak king over that awesome rumbling bass drum.

I’m and old F like most of the VDF members, but some of my favorite drum sounds, bass or otherwise come from some more recent recordings...[ame]https://youtu.be/92XVwY54h5k[/ame][ame]https://youtu.be/TLSpj7q6_mM[/ame]

Stop stringing and tuning your instrument, make music now.
