Thinking of adding extra holes...

Yeah! Drill it!!!

As you can see in my signature, I have a be-bop kit with an 18" kick. 18" RC kicks are somewhat rare, but not impossible to find. It's also the very common piano black finish. If it was a Cobalt Blue kick, I would not even consider taking a drill to it...

I have toyed with the idea of adding a floor tom leg mount to the side of the 18, to make a kick-mounted cymbal mount.

Yamaha never offered this, as their "system hardware" allows all sorts of configurations with a few standard bits and pieces.

I currently use the tall single tom mount arm in this kick, with a cowbell mount clamped to it,(MORE COWBELL!!!) because I'm not crazy about clamping a cowbell mount to my new replacement lacquered Yamaha hoop.

But I was thinking it might be sort of cool and also have me dragging around one less cymbal stand. And since I'm migrating to the (Wicked heavy Sumo Dude ) 900 series stands for everything, that will be about a 20 pound weight savings (although I have no gigs at the moment with a three-year-old to keep out of trouble Laughing H ).

Thoughts?

Why not just get a Ludwig Atlas cymbal mount and forget about drilling holes?

I wholly recommend against adding the holes.

Not familiar with an Atlas no-drill cymbal mount for bass drums?

I usually have the mid-50’s 22 as a ride on that kit. Or maybe the 20” k custom dark ride- they weigh about the same I think.

You can use 1 or 2 atlas mounts to mount a cymbal arm attached to a long or short rod, or you can use one mount and Bonhams' ride cymbal arm coupled with a plastic sleeve/adapter that comes with your atlas mount.

The Atlas mount basically replaces one of the lug mount casings and allows you to adjust the mount to the old holes.

Those look interesting but I don’t think that’ll work with the “high tension” full length lugs on the recording custom drums?

But I appreciate the link- that’s good info for sure.
