Hi all, I picked up a nice Sonor Phonic snare D454 (I think) 8 lugger, ferromanganese shell. Great sounding snare, but as you Sonor guys will know, the shells are metric and regular heads do not fit very snug on the bearing edges.
Can anybody recommend heads that will fit a little better on these snares?

I'm not at all familiar with these vintage Sonor snare drums. Is the diameter of the shell wider or narrower that today's shells? If narrower, I'd say a Remo coated Ambassador will fit nicely. If wider, I'd try an Evans Coated G1, which has the Level 360 bearing edge and should fit. There is also the new Remo Classic Fit head.

The 454 has floating head system, your hoop ring should not touch the shell at all. There should be a 1/8 clearance all the way around it. The correct hoop on the drum allows for this too. I have white heads on my snare so I`ll use a tom to show you what I mean. All Phonic and Super Champions will set the head like this or it`s not correct Phonic performance.

Thank you so much. My snare has the correct hoops. There's a space just like in the photo attached. Great sounding snare. I've had a few different types over the years, but the D454 is becoming one of my favourites.

You will love that snare for jazz and R&B. It has a clean, very short note with little to no overtone. It`s Ferro and seamless. Hoops are seamless too. I sold mine to a guy who needs it and uses it every week. I just basically stored it so, it`s where it belongs now. I play the bigger version, 505 and 506. Killer Rock snares.

You're not wrong about that! Really dry, clean, short note. Nice round tone from the shell. Really nice snare. I've had the 10 lug 545 or whatever it was called. I didn't have it long before I sold it, but it had similar characteristics to the 8 lugger. Really liking this snare. It's great to play one of these shells again. It tends to stretch out the reso head a bit though. I have an ambassador reso side on it and I had to really crank it on there. I think I'll try an Aquarian on it so the hoops are a bit taller on the reso side if that makes sense.
