Ludwig snare identification

Hi everyone,

First of all, English is not my native tongue, so I'm sorry for any misspellings or grammatical errors :-)

So, I bought this snare on a yard sale the other day. It didn't cost much (about 25$) so I thought it could be worth the gamble, because I didn't and I don't know anything about it, only that it looks like a Ludwig.

The snare is a 10 lug 14x6,5".

On the face of it, it looks like it could be a Ludwig snare. I have been searching the internet for a similar snare and found that the Auditorium looks kind of the same, but my snare does not have the internal muffler/dampener. Then I found the Ludwig Pioneer, but I have not found a Pioneer snare that is 6,5 and have 10 lugs. So I'm out of guesses and I'm turning to you guys.

Do you have any idea what this is? What year could it be from?

That's not a 3 ply shell so it would have been made sometime after approx. 1977. It could be a six ply shell from the late 70's/early 80's but there is also a chance that it could be an early 80's "Rocker" type snare that has been refinished. That's about as close as I can manage based on the information at hand. It could be later than that but at some point Ludwig started putting the longer lugs on 6.5" upper line snares.

How many plies in the shell?

My untrained eye would say that it is 4 plies. Maybe the picture attached could help solving this.

Hmm. I'd go with K.O. on the refinished Rocker, but the 10-lug configuration is throwing me off.

I have a good-sounding 6.5" Rocker II with a P-85 and Standard lugs, but it only has 8 of them.

I missed the mention of ten lugs. That should rule out it being a lower line drum. Four plies with ten bowties I'd guess it's an early 80's snare with a super classic shell.

Assuming it is a Ludwig made drum and not an assemblage of Ludwig parts. But on the whole it looks legit to me.

In 1988 they had a Classic shell with 10 classic lugs and p85 option.

#LC403 page 19 in catalog (shell) Chart page 25.(options)

also color looks like it could be (M) classic Mahogany stain that they had as option.

Just a guess.

I figured Ludwig would have cut the bearing edges after staining and not before, but I could be wrong.

By 1984 Ludwig was already using the longer bowties on 6.5" deep drums and I think they had dropped the 4 ply Super Classic option. At least according to this catalog from 1984. I don't have the 1980 catalog scanned so I'm not sure what's in there but I'll try to remember to dig out my hard copy and take a look.

That is something I have noticed when searching myself also, that my drum has somewhat shorter bowtie lugs than many of the others that I have seen. If you have the catalogue close, it would be really interesting.

I believe KO is right, more from the late 70’s early 80’s before longer lugs.

Here is a shot of Buddy sitting next to one like yours but different strainer.
