Rusty lugs

Hi all...

I'm cleaning up an old Slingerland bass drum. 3 of the lugs internal springs/dampner/casing are a bit rusty. Could I use mineral spirits o get the rust/corrosion out? I don't want to damage the chrome or the lug. Any suggestions as to what I could soak these in, would that help? See pics below. Being three are rusted, not all, would that signify water damage to the drum? I don't see any cracks or separation in the wrap or shell. Weird how just 3 look like this out of 20...

There are lots of posts about removing rust and each of us swear by our methods from soaking in WD40 to coke to Evaporust from the auto parts stores. If you have a wire wheel, that works great for the tension rods, don't recommend it on the lugs. Some soak the tension rods in Any of the solutions above then "scrub" them with aluminum foil. I prefer a ziplock bag with Evaporust with the parts suspended in an ultrasonic bath, a few cycles and they look like new. It also depends on the extent of the rust. The springs would do great in the Evaporust or wd40. For the lugs, mothers mag polish works like a champ.

If the bottom ones from the BD are the rusty ones I would imagine they may have sat in water. If you don't see any de lamination of the shell then it should be ok. Look around the lug holes that were rusted, you may see some wood de lamination there

Yep, Michael's reply was great! I prefer Evaporust but, I'm sure other methods and products work equally well. No steel wool though!

Here are a few lugs after soaking in the EvapoRust for just over 3 hours. I'd say it works! The last 3 were the really heavy rusted spring ones from my first post. Shined up the chrome too! Often, you'll need to soak the parts overnight for good results. Looks like those lugs are coming along beautifully though!
