Did Ludwig ever use bow tie lugs on Supraphonics?

Loading...

Greetings,

Local CL Seller is selling a 10 lug snare drum with a Ludalloy sticker but has bow tie lugs instead of Imperial lugs. Also, no mention of a date stamp anywhere. He claims it is from the 80's. Any Ludwig guys no if they used bow tie lugs on Supra's? Also, if it was the 80's, would there be a date stamp?

Thanks,

V

Yes, there are examples of factory Supraphonics with Acrolite (bowtie) lugs and this is even documented in The Ludwig Book. As the Book states, if the lugs are original to the drum, you can remove one and not see the outline of the Imperial lug. From what I can see on this drum, they do look original.

Right before Ludwig moved from Chicago to Monroe in the mid 80's, they had some 10 lug Supra's with original bowtie lugs. They used a large Keystone badge with Chicago on it and most had no serial numbers. Most of them had the grommet placement that was suited for the Blue Olive badges. So this put quite a bit of the large keystone badge under the top hoop. Maybe that's why the badge was removed on this one.

I've had one of these and still have a 5x14 smooth bronze model with bowties and the large keystone badge.

Thanks! I'd have to say that it is either my best or next best sounding snare drum...and I'm fortunate enough to have some gems. Bought it locally on Craigslist, which doesn't happen often around here.

Just curious, what's your best sounding snare drum?

It would be either this bronze model or my early 20's Ludwig 5x14 8 lug with the 2 piece heavy brass shell model.

The Ludwig 75th Anniversary drums were a 6.5 bronze supersensitives with bowties... I think the 1st time they did that...
