Hadn't thought of that... BUT, the 90 sheet minimum wasn't to get them to produced something new, it was just their minimum order requirement on in stock colors. I didn't discuss with them MAKING the POP, I was just trying to get wrap (in general) cheaper...

I ended up buying those drums and directly from “The Drum Shop-Portland,Maine” and they were in excellent condition. They acquired them from someone in CANADA and brought them to Maine. The price,$4,200 at the time(which, btw- I negotiated on)was worth every penny because of the “rarity” of shells like these(1959-Transition Badges) in this particular factory wrap. The set actually has the ultra rare 20”x12” Bass Drum(New Yorker?) I still own/have them and they sound amazing. Since then, I restored the other hoop with original Pink Oyster I got from another collector and did a clean up on all shells. It was a Big Score for me at that time as I saw it as a pinnacle piece in my collection. As of this writing, I have acquired 3 more sets and 4 snares including a 3”x13”-Jazz combo snare, all in Very Fine/Excellent Condition. I am always looking for more as I am pleased to make this, galaxy sparkle, burgundy sparkle and green sparkle in WFL or Ludwig shell make up one my primary focus for collecting. I wanted to comment on this to put the question to rest as to who got the set.

I think POP Ludwig kits are beautiful looking. Not just for the rarity, but the colors and shades, i think are very unique and stunning. Ludwig came out with a Rose Diamond Pearl kit a while back, and i think Steve Maxwell got one of the first kits or only kits made, but i can't be too sure because i don't know how many Ludwig made, or if it was a one-off kit.

That one was nice looking as well.

I wonder which version of Oyster Pink they are offering to make if 90 sheets were ordered? Ludwig did the re-issue a few years back that was basically a white strata pearl base with a pink pigment sort of computer airbrushed over it. This was what they used for the 100th anniversary Limited edition "jazz festival" they sold exclusively through Guitar Center and then made a smattering of kits from the leftover wrap. It was cool in its own right but really nothing like the rare original stuff from back in the late 50's/early 60s.

To make something closer to the original version would require the artisans in Italy to mash red, white, and clear cellulous paste together into a random pattern of streaks and then cast that into blocks that wrap sheets can be cut from once it hardens. I believe that process yields a lot more than 90 sheets too but I don't know that for sure. This is how the most recent Mod Orange re-issue has been done so maybe it could happen if Ludwig sensed enough of a market for it...but I have my doubts.

Much like Citrus mod, the original Pink Pearl didn't sell well for Ludwig so there is very little of it out there (Lots more of the Slingerland and Rogers version exist although they aren't exactly "common" either).

Ludwig's 2009 OPP wrap was made from a photo of the wrap on an OPP Downbeat snare drum given to Todd Trent from WFL2.

My point was simply that the re-issue Oyster Pink was made in a different manner than the original stuff and doesn't look exactly the same as the old stuff, regardless of where it came from. I'd want to know which type they were offering to make before committing to buying any.

Someone could still have it done the old way if they sensed there was enough of a market for it though. They still do the 60's vintage OBP using the original method. The new mod orange is made the old way and I think the recent Blue/Olive oyster was done that way as well, as are the various onyx style wraps. Oyster Pink could likewise be re-created closer to the original but the minimum order to do so represents a steep financial hurdle, even if it is only 90 sheets.
