Mystery 28" bass drum

Loading...

I got this shell awhile back and was wondering if anybody knows what it is.

It measures 28" x 10", a thin or Scotch marching bass drum. The shell is covered in silver sparkle wrap, and the whole thing looks real tight and solid, a better-than-average made drum to me. The inside has a beautiful coat of clear on it. There's no stamps inside.

It's got fade marks where the two eyelets for the straps were. And in the attached pics the badge/vent hole is oval shaped and the two small screw holes are 2" apart. The lugs aren't rounded like Slingerland - I drew a red line in the last pic to show that. They look more like Ludwig. The lug holes are spaced 1 3/4" apart, measured on centers. The drum is drilled for 12 lugs per head.

The guy I got it from had lots of school drums, mostly Ludwig and Slingerland from the early 60's and a bit older.

It would make a cool kick for some retro project, and it's really light so it would be good to transport.

It could be an eagle badge Rogers drum....the shape of the lugs looks like it could be B&B lugs....

Thanks for the replies MIKEY777 and Ludwig-dude.

I checked out some badges. The Rogers Eagle ones I found on line have a vent hole that isn't in line with the screw holes, it's lower. But maybe they made some other kinds that were though.

The Camco badges that I found didn't have screws mounting them on.

Not real important, but it sure is a nice shell.

It can't be Slingerland as they didn't tack the ends of the badges like that, and the same with Camco. Definitely NOT Ludwig, as they didn't tack the ends of the Conn era badges either and they shape of the non-faded area doesn't match any lug shape of any Ludwig lug I have seen.

To correct myself on my earlier post, and after a little research......It's got to be Rogers from the mid 1960's onward. The Dyna-sonic badge was used on their marching drums back then and the faded footprint is close to the Beavertail lug pattern. The dynasonic badge was oval, used tacks on the ends and the vent hole was centered.

The Dynasonic badge looks like a perfect match - as do the lugs.

Thanks!

Now I know who made such a beautiful shell.

It took some digging, but I got it figured out! LOL! I knew it was Rogers, just couldn't pin down the era at first. :D

You know what's funny for me is that the shell has been sitting in my back room for 3 years and all along there's been this voice in my head saying "that's a Rogers shell".

Why? Because it didn't have a Ludwig keystone or Gretsch badge fade mark, the lugs weren't rounded like Slingerlands and I knew it was a school drum and in the 50's and 60's none of the Japanese drum companies were selling to schools that I knew of. All the schools where I grew up were 100% Ludwig. I never saw a Ludwig shell that was as perfect as this one.

So that left Rogers and Camco, and Camco seemed very unlikely simply due to numbers.

If the Gretsch marching drums weigh anything like my RB's it's a small wonder why they didn't get too many school contracts!

Hi MastroSnare, I are a bit late on this one :p

I too have a 28 x 10 marcher and it's a Rogers - called a Yorktown - circa 1963 - '64. Mine is a transition drum from when the Yorktown name was phased out and change to the Powertone line.

I did a cheap refurb of it and it turned out ok - I bought claws from DrumMaker that I'm not too happy with - rather have originals, and I cheated on the hoop inlay, but otherwise I dig it.

I'd be happy to share here or off site any of my pics & info.

One thing I think, from your clues & pics, is that your drum is a later period. Unless your interior was stripped & clear coated, according to the Mighty Ploughman - Rogers clear interiors were 1979-1984. BUT, per your badge observations, I'd agree on the Dynasonic badge.

From looking at your interior shot, I'd say your was stripped, as it seems that there might me some paint or something left over on the inside of your re-rings.

Also, my sparkle is a crushed glass, yours looks more glitter - I don't know enough about Rogers and their timeline, regarding finishes, so maybe that fits into the later period [late 60s - 70s].

Here's a link to pics of mine in progress - just for kicks Laughing H - I'm a novice at stuff & didn't have a lot of $$$, but got it rolling for about $100, from udder disrepair. Faded gold. It goes BOOM!

LAST - Here's a link to Tommykat's list of Rogers catalogs over at the Rogers Owners Forum - you can maybe find your drum in the post-1966 cats
