Slingerland Snare -- Original?

Loading...

I'm hoping that one of you Slingerland experts out there might be able to tell me if the paint or wrap on this '59-'61 snare appears to be original. The current owner claims that "everything" is original on the drum but I've never seen a finish like this on any drum from that time period or in any Slingerland catalog. In addition to that, there seem to be some sort of faded "rings" on the outer edges of the red finish, unless my "good eye" is deceiving me. I was thinking that the drum might have originally had a duco finish which was painted over by a prior owner. I inquired regarding that possibility but was told that it wasn't the case. Something just doesn't seem "correct" here. Perhaps it's just me. Any words of wisdom would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

You could order a drum in any color lacquer you wanted back then but due to the two-toned nature of the current finish I'd guess that at some point someone sprayed a new coat of that red Duco over an original two toned finish.

I suppose there is always the possibility that the factory did so when they needed a red drum for an order or if someone wanted a two tone finish in dark and lighter red, but either seems less likely.

Completely agree with what K.O. says.

Hadn't noticed that, but yeah, I don't think the factory would have got paint there.

Thanks to all for your input. The current owner has now stated that the shell "might have been painted", as I had originally thought. I think it's pretty clear that it was originally a duco. Anyway, I then asked about the interior of the shell being painted red. He denied that was the case and forwarded the attached pics. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to see the drum in person. Can any of you tell me the type of wood and number of plies, based on these pics? Again, the drum's got Slingerland's black and brass Chicago badge from '59 - '61. Thanks again for your help!

I'm thinking "Hollywood Ace" with "three ply laminate" shell, one of which is obviously mahogany. Maybe maple/poplar/mahogany?

Agree, definitely 3-ply.
