Speed King-Should I "pre-lube/clean" before the lithium grease?

Loading...

Greetings,

I've cleaned out my share of Speed Kings, but as I am about to do another, I got to thinking. I know many of you use white lithium grease for lubrication on pedals, tension rods etc. I haven't used it yet myself, but I'm going to give it a go on this restore. My question is:

I usually use Tri-Flow spray lubricant for lubing and greasing pedals and hi-hat stands. Tri-Flow is great, as it has teflon that both lubricates and cleans at the same time and doesn't gunk up like WD-40 does. I was thinking about cleaning out the pedal very thoroughly like I normally do, but then using the Tri-Flow just before I re-assemble it, to not only lubricate it, but to really clean out any of the extra gunk I might have missed. My plan was to re-lubricate with the Tri-Flow, play it for a couple of weeks, then dis-assemble, re-clean it to see if any extra gunk wore off, and then do a "final" lubrication (at least for several years) of white lithium grease.

What do you guys think?

Thanks,

V

White Lithium grease dries out. It flattens out too and collects dirt. I use red axle grease, that`s designed to flow around and that`s what you`re putting it on, an cam axle with closed ball bearings. If there are pellets inside, make sure you put them back, they stir the grease during use.

It`s a drum,.....Hit It !!

Oy! Not lithium, please. Silicon is my choice. Even the spray coats pieces and keeps them smooth for a long, ling time. Bearings, springs, tower.... my 2c* ;)

I was waiting for you to chime in! :D

Ben sold me a Speedking he refurbished about 6 years ago. The pedal is still smooth as silk and completely silent during use. Any advice you get from him is coming from someone who really knows how to get these pedals working at optimum performance. His opinions (on Speedking's especially) is worth a lot more than 2 cents.

Too many great drums to list here!

Thanks for the replies.

Ben, is there specific kind of silicone that you recommend?

Should I still do the Tri-Flow first and then the silicone?
