Help With Rogers Powertone Snare Drum

Loading...

I've got a Rogers Powertone Snare Drum that I purchased some time ago. I'm in the process of determining whether I'm going to keep this one or offer it for sale. However, I'm hoping to obtain some definitive answers to a couple of questions I've got concerning the drum.

Sooooooooooooo, here goes:

1. When I purchased the drum it didn't have the Rogers label on the interior of the shell. Can someone tell me, after reviewing the pics that I've posted, the approximate year this one might have been manufactured?

2. I recently removed the head that was mounted on the drum when I purchased it and noticed that there is a single hole drilled in the shell above the strainer as well as one above the snare butt (please see the last two pics). The holes are located on the extreme upper portion of the shell. Is there some reason for these? They can't be seen with the head mounted on the shell. Were these "factory-drilled" or perhaps added afterwards?

As usual, thanks in advance for your time and your help!

The holes are factory, I have them on some of my Dynasonics. Only thing I can think is some kind of alignment holes or to hold the drum when chroming. I believe yours would be mid to late 60's, if they are Bread and Butter lugs, then it's the early model, early 60's. If all the hardware is in good shape, I'd be willing to know your price, I am in the middle of a restoration for a Blue Onyx and need the hardware. PM me if you want.

Its better to have people think you're an idiot, than to open your mouth and prove them wrong, unless you doubt yourself then speak away....

Oh, gosh...if you sell it, please don't sell it for parts. Besides the label, that snare is complete....

I have one from about the same era (I didn't notice the 2 small holes, but I may have just missed those...anyway, it's my regular snare so I am not gonna take the heads off right now...) They are worth about $175.

I concur with ploughman re the dating. The white felt muffler is a dead giveaway.

I have noticed that when a label is missing, the drum is almost always Fullerton era. Sometimes I think it is done intentionally to try to pass the drum off as a Cleveland or Dayton era drum.

My Rogers toms are Dayton tags, flat gray paint, and white mufflers.

Flat gray daytons cannot have original white felt mufflers.

Didn't they use the rest of the remaining Dayton tags when they set up shop in Fullerton ? I thought I had read that somewhere.....

Yes, and you occasionally find some Clev tags mixed in as well, but the shells would have had speckled interiors. Are the hardware mounting bolts round slotted heads or hex heads.

A couple of possibilities..... Either the mufflers were switched at one point or perhaps they happened to find some older flat grey interior shells during the move and elected to use them.

I honestly don't know. I'm still laid up and can't get to them. I'm somewhat immobile for a while. All I know is they are Rogers and will sound cool. I'm really not concerned with this level of detail. It's just something I noticed and/or recall. I'll check again in a day or so just to be sure.
