Fat Albert hats.......

So, I`m driving and see some Custom A`s sticking out of a cycle bin on the sidewalk. I stopped, picked them out, and saw Two A`s with bad chunks missing all the way around. They are Custom A`s with serials. One is a 16" crash/something not readable, the other is an 18" crash/something...

Anyways I need a new set of Fat Albert hats to use on practice and fun drumming. Took a white bucket, sharpy, and snips then got two 12`s. One thick (18) with large bell, the other much thinner(16) with small bell.

Don`t know what I`ll end up with yet because they are at the shop over the weekend hanging waiting to be edged and maybe, ..just maybe meet a 24 ounce small sledge for tuning.

Never done it before, I will post pics soon and let you all know if they will fit in the junkyard collection as hats. I been swinging a hammer all my life on cars and homes. It`ll get beat on.

So after writing above, went to my tool box at home and got a 24 ounce and hit a piece of cut-off from the A`s to see how it will roll. Gonna need a 5 pound.

Back in the 80’s a friend and I “tuned” some cymbals this way.

There were some old A field cymbals that basically shattered under the hammer and some cheap-o high hats that were more flexible. We were laughing our asses off because we made small China cymbals and marked them “CRUDE” after the Paiste offerings.

That was a fun day.

PS: one of the larger (18”?) cheap cymbals ended up sounding really good as a China. Fast forward several years and John Fishman uses it on stage after breaking his and my guitar making partner asks for a loaner. He broke that one too and then wanted my Wuhan... uh, no.

Back in the 80’s a friend and I “tuned” some cymbals this way. There were some old A field cymbals that basically shattered under the hammer and some cheap-o high hats that were more flexible. I`m kinda hoping they don`t shatter. The small 24 ounce only jumps the metal cut-off around uncontrollably. Monday I`ll try a sheet metal hammer on the anval. If I need to. The heavier of the two is clangy and maybe I can stretch it and cut it again thinner. I was thinking of screwing it on a bowling ball and getting a taper around the flat edge. I do love the fire truck sounding bell on it though, hope that don`t change.

Work is slow in Winter.

I think they were Camber hats that were sacrificed.

I will add that my mid-50’s ride was “tuned” by Justin Ottaviano by overhammering. That dryed out the wash a bit and darkened it up a bit as well. His words after evaluating it: “ I would t take any weight out of it. You basically have a perfect 22 inch crash. “ I originally was thinking he could turn the underside to take weight out of it, which primpted the comment. It was a literal wall of wash. Even with nylon tips that old cymbal would build a wash that drowned the stick sound right out.

My old Hats that just say Japan in itty bitty words, ...is now a China. It just molded itself over time. I got them back once but the second time they cracked up there where they are useless.

Yeah- I now recall one of the Cambers inverted, which let to the percussive reorientation of the cymbal (via hammer) and my first (and last) foray into cymbal making...

Leave it to someone like Justin. He gets it.
