Ludwig Blue Cortex Scratch Repair?

Loading...

I consider my c.1980 Big Beat kit to be in great shape for it's age. But my 12"x 8" tom has some scratching to the Blue Cortex finish.

Is it possible to repair this? And if so how?

Hello... and Welcome to the forum!

The scratching on your tom is most like "snare rash", from rubbing against the snare drum during play. A common problem! It looks like the scratching only affects the outside clear layer and doesn't appear to be too deep. It may be possible to completely remove this, or at least softened to look much better. Here in the States, there is a product called Novus and comes in three different formulas. Novus #3 is used for deep scratch removal. Results vary, depending on how deep the scratch is and how much material has to be removed. Still, used properly, I really think it will work very well to lessen the scratches. Check to see if this is available to you or another similar product!

Thanks for that Mark. It is indeed "snare rash". I will have a look to see if Novus or a similar product is available in the UK.

I will update in due course.

I have often thought on deep deep scratches if you get them cleaned up (the hole or deep scratch) wouldn't a dab or two of poly, or poly applied from a syringe fill the hole? Has anyone tried this? I've seen this sort of thing done on guitars but never on a drum wrap - and this application on guitars was done with wood finishes.

Have you got any solution about hoe you may repair this. My friend also faced the same problem and chose [ame]https://plus.google.com/102642981778688407461[/ame] to repair his drums. His feedback was nice about the professionals and services there.

I don't think Novus is going to fix that on it's own. I think your going to have to wet sand that first and then buff with Novus 3,2 and 1.

Hi

Finally been able to post an update!

I managed to get hold of some Novus and after several hours work I have been able to remove the majority of the scratches. Only the deeper indentations remain. Previously the scratches were obvious, now you have to look closely to see them.

Thanks for your advice!

Fantastic Job !

I didn't realize that it would do that on such deep scratches.

Another win for Novus . . . and lots of elbow grease

Thanks. I am delighted and amazed how successful it was. It did take several hours of repeated polishing, but sitting in the sun with a few beers whilst I did it helped ease the pain!
