Slingy experts: Ever see this?

Loading...

So I acquired a nice pair of 8"&10" concert toms from a fellow member here with the intent of rewrapping to match an existing kit....

When I inspected the interior of the 10", I noticed what appeared to be another badge mounted under the inside grommet edge....

After carefully removing the grommet, I discovered a Niles badge bearing the next consecutive number to the badge mounted on the exterior of the shell....

Needless to say, this consecutive number will now go on the 8" tom so the pair will be numbered 480023 and 480024.

My question is: Have any of you ever seen this before? Why would someone at the factory mount a badge on the interior? And it was only on the 10", not the 8". Curious.

Ludwig did this also.

I believe it is for shimming purposes to get the outer badge to sit tight against the shell.

"Need a thin shim?" " How about that thin piece of metal in the stack?

They got more"

I used to own a WFL snare drum that had at least a half dozen badges on the interior side of the grommet. It was a thin shell drum.....

A new episode from the land of bizarro! You learn something new everyday!

I had a great day! Instead of sleeping in and wasting the day, I got up at 8 and I had all my slacking done by noon!

Thanks for all the info and comments, guys. Since the badge on the 8" was #51324, I'll just enjoy the serendipity of finding the consecutive serial number inside the 10". Guess this wasn't such a rare occurrence after all given your examples (6 WFL badges used as shims BEC, really?), but you'd think the assemblers would have had thin washers available to them rather than use up badges. Oh well, it's just one more curiosity to add to the chapter of drum-making oddities.

Was there any splintering around the hole internally that someone may have attempted to hide??

(Have seen two consecutive numbers stuck together & affixed as usual on the outside)..

Cheers

Now that you mentioned it, I inspected the grommet hole and did notice some internal splintering. So maybe the inside badge was not used to shim the grommet tighter, but rather used just to hide the splintering. The little bit of splintering doesn't bother me, so I'll just leave it as-is.
