Camco Restoration - a labor of love.

My dad used to tell a story about getting these drums. He went to the factory and selected the shells himself. They were supposed to get wrapped, but he asked that they keep them natural and just get a clear coat. That's why they are white on the inside. Later my dad stained them walnut. And then even later he wrapped two of them in a wood veneer ( I have no idea why). I removed the veneer off of the two drums and then sanded them to remove the glue. I still need to sand the bass.

Sizes -

20 inch bass drum.

13 inch tom

16 inch floor tom

14 inch snare drum

I think he originally had Rogers hardware for the tom mount (I have the arm on this). At some point, he abandoned that and used a Ludwig tom mount (huge hole), which I still have.

Should I replace the Ludwig mount with a Camco one or use a Rogers one? I have someone who can repair the holes either way. He's the real deal.

I think I am going to do these with an ebony stain.

I'd appreciate any thoughts.

Thanks in advance,

Walt

I'm not sure what your plans are with this drum set but, I'm guessing due to the sentimental value you are keeping them?

I say that because unfortunately these drum will never bring in top dollar... too much tampering has caused too many extra holes and mods... however, it can be repaired but it will never be original again... but... might be well worth it to you.

Yes, I plan on keeping them. Just looking for advice on how to proceed in doing the restoration. These drums were gigged a ton by my dad and they sound awesome. I'd like to get them looking good again and play them for the next 40 years or so.

If those are the spur mount holes I see, The center mount will put the mount and toms` weight on the spurs giving less shake than the forward one.

Something to think about if you hit hard.

If your reach is long, the forward one will help.

It`s a drum,.....Hit It !!

Okay then, I suggest you plug all the extra Ludwig holes and go with the Rogers mount.

Go with the Rogers... for some reason I cannot explain an awful lot of Camco kits ended up with Rogers hardware on them. The kit will fit in with its peers if you restore the Rogers mounts.

Too many great drums to list here!

Another vote for the Rogers mount. It was not uncommon for Camco kits to have Rogers mounts if asked for by the purchaser. There are promo photos of Camco drums featuring endorser drummers, and you sometimes see the Rogers tom mounts installed (just like you might on Ringo's Ludwig OBP kit). On top of this they work really well! If I have a choice, I like to find George Way, Camco, and even Gretsch kits with original Rogers tom mounts rather than the W&A rail mounts.

I'd plug all the holes and forget about a tom mount. That plywood has been through enough. Put the tom on a snare stand.

That was my original plan - my dad was hard on that poor bass dru . But the Rogers holes are already there on the bass and tom.
