Old 12" A. Zildjian Splash

Loading...

Greetings,

I've had this a while and I just wanted to get a consensus from the very knowledgeable group here on it's age.

If you notice in Photo 1 of the stamp, there is also a tiny bit of a double stamp at the bottom right (top left in the picture) of the normal stamp. I'm not sure why the photo loaded upside down. The original I uploaded from is right side up. Weird.

Also in Photo 2 of the bottom of the cymbal, at the top you can make out the stamp from the top; it is easily read (backwards, of course) from the bottom of the cymbal, although the bit of double stamp is not seen from the bottom. It also visible on Photo 3 at around 10 o 'clock.

Also, there is a signature on the underside of the bell (photo 2). The "342" is the gram weight, which I wrote myself.

The cymbal did have the smaller mounting hole (purist vintage cymbal lovers please turn away for the next 11 words) that I enlarged to be able to fit on modern stands.

I'm guessing this is early to mid-50's, possibly even late 40's?

It's not the lightest 12" splash I own, but it is super thin and plays much lighter than the 342 grams it weighs. Super airy, super quick to respond, and a dark tone with just a tiny hint of "bite" or "trash". I love it.

Thanks for your help,

V

That's what is called the First Stamp these days. Bill Hartrick didn't formally name it in his original article, but the name seems in common use now. There are actually a bunch of these which combine different tops and bottoms. I've documented at least 7 now. That could be 1930s or early 1940s. Late 40s marks the beginning of the Trans Stamps, and it is thought to be earlier than those.

and the details of multiple combinations:

Given the out of focus picture of your stamp I'm not 100% sure if it is the Chunky Ottoman or the Thin Ottoman, but the bottom is English Bottom 2.

The signature is the company name. It says: Avedis Zildjian Co. although I'm still not 100% sure about the Co being there.

Multiple imprints of sections of the stamp are common. It seems to have to do with the technique used back then. That changed with the coming of the Trans Stamps.

I won't beat you up, but you could have acquired a stand to fit it. My son and I have three such stands to fit the smaller holes of vintage cymbals. I personally wouldn't enlarge the hole for two reasons, First it could have a small, but negative impact on the value. Second, when a cymbal has made it 60-65 years without being altered, I don't feel right about modifying something that has gone unscathed for that long. As a result I also wouldn't add rivets to such a cymbal.

Thanks Zen. You nailed it, as always.

I'm surprised it is even older than I thought. Good to know.

Mark, I totally hear you about the mounting hole. The problem is I use that cymbal with several different kits, and some of them only have 8 mm stands, so I would get set up and realize I couldn't use the cymbal with that kit.

I figure that has such a small impact that I, at least to myself, can justify it. I'm in complete agreement with you about rivets, though. If it made it this long without them, no need for me to add them.
