Need tip for fixing loose cow bell bracket.

Loading...

Not sure if I should post here or in the cymbal forum. I have a Ludwig cow bell with loose rivets that hold the bracket on. Any suggestions for tightening are appreciated.

I’ve been wrapping some waxed thread in there to tighten them but keeps coming loose.

Thanks

Support the outside head of the rivet on something metallic and solid (vice maybe?) and use a long Pin Punch to reach inside and tap the rivets to tighten them. Cheaper if you do not have access to a pin punch - use a piece of solid steel round stock. Both available at local hardware stores.

An alternative to the above wise advice, especially if the existing rivets are not conducive to the above, is to drill out the original rivets and replace with new rivets. Use the most robust rivets that will fit, and reinforce with a washer on the inside. That’s what someone did to my ol’ Ludwig cowbell. Keeping the originals would be ideal, though...

Thanks, I’ll look for a long enough pin punch and some kind of metal service. My neighbor across the street works on BMWs and he may have this stuff. I hope I don’t have to try the alternative method.

I’ll report back and let you know how it worked.

You neighbor should have a long enough extension from a socket set to use instead if no pin punch. Good luck.

The rivets on my Ludwig bell are also a bit loose. The suggestions made are great! We certainly have a helpful forum members! I have even tried dental floss BUT, in the long run, I simply left the bell alone like Josh suggests. Unless you have a super sensitive ear, I can't see its making much difference.
