Mic set up for singing?

Loading...

Hey Guys,

Starting to dabble a little with singing and am trying to figure out a mic set up that is comfortable for me.

I am considering trying a set up like the one on this link.

https://www.sweetwater.com/insync/vocal-miking-for-the-singing-drummer/

Does anyone else use a set up like this? Is a standard height stand tall enough? How about a mic? Experience with the Shure Beta 56? It looks like it does not have an on/off switch which seems like that could be an issue.

Thanks,

Wes

That setup in your link with the boom stand and the goose neck is what I used to use when I sang, with he boom above my head and the goose neck bringing the mic right down in front. I put the mic stand near my hi hat stand.

You can push it up completely out of the way when you don't need the mic.

A regular mic stand worked for me. That set up kept the microphone pretty safe from getting beat to death.

1971 Ludwig Rock Duo set in Blue Oyster Pearl
early Mapex dual bass drum Saturn kit
1964 Leedy Ray  Mosca kit in Blue Sparkle
1959 Slingerland Super Gene Krupa snare in WMP
1968 Slingerland Hollywood Ace Snare Drum
1969 and 1977 Ludwig 400 Supraphonic snares
1965 Acrolite snare
Ludwig Coliseum snare
'68 Rogers Dynasonic snare
Pearl free floating piccolo snare
13" Mapex piccolo snare
6.5" deep Mapex steel snare
Mapex 6.5" Brass snare
I know there's more snares than that.

You can sing and play at the same time? guitar2

Not me man. I tried so many times and only two things ever happen, I screw up the lyrics, or I screw up the drumming. Mind you I have limb independence, but I just can't sing and play at the same time. What I'm saying with my mouth trips up my drumming. Respect. I envy you guys that can do that.

Singing drummer here. I use a standard boom mic on my right side coming in at mouth height. No gooseneck. Inexpensive and works good for me.

My kit:
Ludwig Vistalite Big Beat set consisting of:
14” X 22” bass, 16” X 16” floor tom, 8” X 12” ride tom, 9” X 13” ride tom, 5” X 14” snare
Ludwig 201 Speed King bass drum pedal
Ludwig 1124 Spur-lok hit-hat with Ludwig Standard Paiste 14” cymbals (760 & 770 gr) with ching-ring
Two Ludwig Standard S-270 cymbals stands
18” Zildjian crash cymbal (1550 gr) and 20” Zildjian ride cymbal (2130 gr) with CAMCO sizzler
Gibraltar motorcycle seat-style drum throne with backrest

Never ever tried to sing and play, but then again I sound like a goat stuck in a gate when I sing. I used a boom and goose neck to do the intros of the band and just horse around with, always worked like a charm and could easily be moved up and away. My best buddy, like Phil C, lead sings for his band and has always sworn to the boom stand with the goose neck. He started with the side boom and it always got in his way.

No Guru - I just love collecting & learning about vintage drums!

Some of my favorites from the kits in the collection
58 WFL New Yorker Blue Sparkle
67 Ludwig Hollywood Red Psychedelic
69 Ludwig Standard Red Ruby Strata
70's Ludwig BOP "Ringo" Kit

A few of my favorite snares
20's Leedy Black Elite
51 Leedy & Ludwig Knob Tension
58 WFL Buddy Rich Classic Blue Sparkle
63 Walberg & Auge Sea Blue Agave Green Pearl
66 Leedy Shelly Manne Blue Agate Pearl

Let's not get carried away with being able to sing and play!Laughing H

I figured I needed to give it a shot at some point to help carry my weight with the band. It has taken me years to actually build up the courage. After a jam singing a song, the guys are all in! I definitely played the song differently while singing though. Had to keep a more simple groove. Hopefully I can improve on that part.

I use about the same set-up as Tinman. The base of my mic stand is in between my two floor toms. I picked up the stand at an antique shop. It wasn't vintage but, it was in good shape. When I first tried it out, it seemed a bit wobbly though. I painted one of my weights a glossy black and mounted it above the base. The set-up has served me well for many years! Don't worry about simplifying the groove. In time, it will all become second nature!

You're laughing! It's not so easy for some guys. I think it's a brain wiring thing. Some people are able to split their brian and perform two different functions at the same time with agility while for other schmucks like me with bad brains we can only handle doing one activity at a time and still be able to do it well. I meant it, I envy you guys that find that stuff 'easy.' I just can't do it period. I can play you some drums though! :D

I have a drummer friend that has tried to play and sing to no avail. For him, it is because he counts (in his head) when he plays.

When I play and sing, I am "listening" to an audio of the song in my head and recreating that sound.

Ludwig Vistalite Big Beat set consisting of:
14” X 22” bass, 16” X 16” floor tom, 8” X 12” ride tom, 9” X 13” ride tom, 5” X 14” snare
