Rogers Concert Tom identification?

Loading...

I've been playing drums since 1972. I bought my 1st set of Rogers Big R drums in 1978. They were 2 years old when I bought them from a friend. They are originally a 5 piece kit & are 1976 models. They have 5 digit serial numbers instead of 6(early models)Ever since I've been adding additional pieces one by one as I found them. I now have a 12 piece, double bass(24") kit. One of the drums I recently purchased was a 15" concert Tom. All my drums are New England White & in excellent condition. This 15" Concert Tom was advertised as being from the 70's, however upon receiving it, I was puzzled by what I found. It has NO BADGE on it! None! Doesn't appear that it ever had one. The grommet is there undisturbed but there's is no badge, emblem or anything on it. It looks all original & doesn't appear to be reconditioned in any way. I've check my Rogers book, several internet sites & asked everyone I know but nothing, no info at all. That's when Siri told me about this site which I'm glad I found. I am at your mercy. Please.....guys & gals......what do I have here? Is it a Rogers remake? A knockoff? Is it legit? What year is it from? Why doesn't it have a badge on it? This has me baffled so I'm asking for your help! I am planning on returning it to the person I purchased it from because it doesn't have a badge & quite possibly was advertised incorrectly......but I wanted to check it out thoroughly before I did. Maybe I have something rare here....maybe not.........I just want to be sure before I contact the seller. Thanks for any info you can give me on this matter! I will wait for your replies............cappyhamper

Cappy,

Everything about that shell looks like a legit Big R concert tom. Original wrap with original chrome foil trim on the bottom, unmolested grommet, Big R mount holes in the correct off-centered location, wrap seam in the right place. The only thing missing is the Big R foil label, but remember, those foil labels could be easily pealed off. Why someone would peal off the label is a mystery, but that's what appears to have happened here. The missing label could not have been a factory error, as the person installing the grommet would have noticed instantly that the label wasn't yet applied to the shell.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the info Mike! I agree with you, especially after further inspection of the shell, I noticed that there was a small gap between the shell & the grommet telling me that something was removed. Good call Mike! I was leaning that way but could not understand why somebody would remove the badge??? It must have been destroyed.

I noticed he has other shells available in similar condition. At least one of them does not have a badge on it as well. Another one he offers has the badge but the badge is not in good shape, so it seems as though it is a reaccurring theme. Well, thanks for your help Mike. Unless anybody else has something to add, I will consider this mystery solved!

When I get time I'll post another set of photos from the 1st 15" concert Tom that I bought a while ago. It has a weird interior, strangest thing I've ever seen! I am trying to replace it because it doesn't match my kit, that's why I bought this latest Tom. I thought it would match the rest of my kit, but without a badge, it's useless to me. So, stay tuned .......another Rogers mystery coming your way soon. Jeff

Mike!

Not being as educated with the Big R series as I am with everything that came before, I did notice the off-centered holes for the tom mount and thought it odd. After reading your information, this is how Rogers installed them? Any idea the reasoning for this position?
