can I fix an out of round drum?

I think Jaye's idea is great. Combine that with the steam and there you have it.

Last year I bought one of those $40 steamers at Kmart - it's a Shark and it's not good quality (that's a funny company) but it does work and man is it useful for cleaning stuff. The Shark sucks but steam is great is what I'm saying.

Mine keeps on sticking because we have lots of minerals in the water here, and I use vinegar and Whink to get it moving... but that aside it is a really handy rig. I keep on finding new uses for it.

I used it to bend a wood flesh hoop I got from Stern's for a 11" drum that needed to be a bit smaller diameter.

Would it make any difference if it had a wood flesh hoop and a calf head? I wouldn't think it would, and that IS how the drum came from the factory... I will stop....

Wait ? Just so I don't misunderstand....

I am assuming you weren't saying the drum came out of the factory 1/4" out of round, right ? Because, no way did it, I would bet my bank account on that.

'Would it make a difference, etc ?' , in what respect ?

I mean, heck, sure....if you CAN get any head to work on it, just go for it. Some types of heads are more flexible than others. You mentioned an option. Another are the Luddy coateds...they have the most flexible tension rings...you can really bend 'em, warp 'em with some pressure.

Yes, a tad of pressure on the shell.....to put it in-round.... then slap the head on there (might take 2 people) and if you can tune 'er up and she plays, then consider it a victory.

I have found such condition messes with the head tuning (i.e. some rods get cranked and others end up very loose; it sorta governs the lowest tone you can really properly tune the tom to, which may likely be higher than you would otherwise)...but again, if you can achieve a decent sound from the drum, then that's something to be happy with....

When I mean worthless I mean, if you ever sold that drum, you would obviously accurately represent the condition...and that would drop it's value thru the floor....I would think.

Just me and my drum... sweating off those extra pounds... heavenly...

By "that IS how it came from the factory" I meant that it came with a wood flesh hoop and calf head from the factory, not out of round! Slingerland's Special "Drums for People You Don't Like " series.

When you tuck a head it would be easy to make it 1/4" out of round - an out of round head for an out of round shell. Once it settled in there'd be so much head to shell contact that the out-of-roundness wouldn't matter I wouldn't think.

I'd be tucking a head for sure on that drum. For one, it would be really cool to have a 70 year old drum with a tucked head and two, it would probably solve your problem. You may be tuning it more often with a tucked head. I've tucked many conga heads.......I did one today in fact. I haven't tucked a kit drumhead yet.......would like to though.

x-mas2 yes Christmas is coming .........

I still want to get my own custom rubber stamp made for my calf heads.

Falling Do mmmmmmmmeggggsellent......

Sure the tucked heads might work, although I also do suppose your other method of applying temporary pressure would work; and just use a standard stock head with some flex to the ring....I mean, less work, and it'd likely work....

I agree, once a head is on it and tuned up OK, if your intent is to play 'em and not try to sell to make a killing....who cares if the shell is 1/4" out-of-round, really ???
