Broken Large Classic Lug (help)

Loading...

I was messing around with tuning my drums by applying different tensions to each head when all of a sudden I heard something bouncing around inside the drum. I guess I tightened the bottom head to much because I discovered that one of the legs on the lug that penetrates the drum had broken off. Is this common or did I get to crazy? The drum this happened on is a vintage Ludwig 3 ply 16x16 FT. I saw some Lugs on e-bay but they never say the depth of the legs. What I mean is the legs must be shorter for 3 ply maple than say 6 ply maple correct? Anyways I am looking for a Lug to replace it and have posted a thread in the wanted to buy forum. I only posted this thread because I don't know if people check that forum regularly. If you can help please go to:

The trick is to check the bottom of the lug. Teh older 3-ply lugs were hollow. The 6-ply lugs got filled in quite a bit to keep them from breaking. Let me look for some pics... Or go take my own..

I would like to replace the lug with one that has the same size studs so I dont have to modify with washers and such.

You will get a kick out of this,

I did a Google image search for Large Classic Lug and stumbled upon this. The topic was Ludwig Rocker Lugs.

Once again, great info LVDC.

I would like to add that although the studs are different length, the hole spacing is exactly the same as a large Classic lug. So while you may need different screw/washers to swap out lugs, you will not have to redrill any holes.

Kudos again, LVDC!!

HAhahahahahahahahahahahahaha... My reputation precedes me.. DOH

From DW, I believe. Did the whole thread show up? LVDC may posted pics of the Classic lugs over the years. If not, I have some I can take pics of...

And the Rocker/Standard lugs do have the same hole spacing. I'm sure it was Easier for Ludwig to use the same drill press for both types of drums...

Correction........Some of the Rocker/Standard lugs have the same spacing. The Bass drum lugs have a larger pattern than the classic lugs. The pattern is actually the same as the imperial snare lug and also the acrolite/superclassic snare lugs (for a 5x14 drum of course)

Not on my Standards... :D Go figure Eye Ball

Are you sure? That would make the lugs at least 1/2" longer. ALL of my Rocker/Standard lugs are the Classic 1 11/16" spacing. The acro lugs have the same spacing as the Rocker/Standard snare lugs @ 2 3/16".

I'm not saying it isn't possible, after all, Ludwig did a lot of strange things at times..DOH

Yep, the bass drums lugs on the Rocker series were 2 3/16" spacing, and sometimes they ended up on the toms too.....not always, but sometimes.

I've seen more or less filled in Classic lugs on the same drum. Some of the lugs were very hollow, while others were more filled in. This was on a late-sixties tom, and I believe the drum was all original. Even had old ludwig heads on it. It didn't look to have been tampered with in any way. Like other pieces of hardware, I think Ludwig changed lug molds a few times in the sixties and would use whatever stock they had available. My 1964 kit has very heavy, filled in lugs on it, while my '67 kit has lugs that are lighter, and less filled in. I also purchased a separate tom dating from 1964 at a later date, and it too has the very heavy filled in lugs. So, who knows for sure?
