Question Sir and to the Other MIJ Experts

What swivel nut/rod thread size does Appollo use?

Is that the generic thread for MIJ's?

How many different swivel nut/rod threads are there for MIJ?

For USA, the thread standard is 12/24.

Thanks

Have a feeling we're talking about metric tension rods.

If they are metric, you don't have to replace the lugs. Just remove the lugs, take out the lug nuts and use a 12-24 tap. I've done this with many MIJ lugs that were metric. Problem solved!

Take a lug off the drum and take it to a hardware store with a good selection of Bolts.

Try out the metric bolts until you get the size that threads in nicely to the swivel nut inside the lug.

Then you will know what size threads you need.

Start with 6mm and see.

Metric is Xmm and X pitch.

That's millimeter size and pitch size.

If no metrics fit then try 7/32 in SAE size.

If all you need is rods?

Someone here will have them or

Drum Factory Direct.

The whole replace lugs and rods thing gets real expensive real quick.

We will help you.

You're welcome! I believe that the metric rods on these MIJ drums were normally 4mm, which is very close to the diameter of the 12-24 rod. I did not need to drill first with a drill bit. The 12-24 tap went right in, cutting new threads. Would be best to blow out the nuts with an air compressor after tapping them.

Let us know if this works out for you.

Mr. Rogers,

See thread above this one called KENWOOD.

He is an MIJ guy.

I asked him about your rods.

The re-tapping idea sounds real good if the diameters are "friendly."

Hi ggd!

I also found your post to KENWOOD and replied to it. And, yes, retapping does make sense when the diameters are "friendly", which is usually the case for the majority of 4mm tension rods. I don't recall the pitch, but probably 1.25.

I've only had one MIJ snare drum that used 6mm tension rods. These were very close to a 1/4-20 thread! I'll post a picture showing the 6mm rod next to a 12-24. You can really see the difference!
