Should be glued in. Probably easier to cut the shell off unless the glue has failed a little bit over the years.

I'm with Jeff... circumcise the bugger! Easiest way. You might have to cut it back anyway if the wood along the bottom rim is FUBAR from the tacks, glue job and your removal attempts.

Off with its head! Start your new bearing edge with clean, sound wood.

Wasn't there a method in which you placed the drum in a freezer and the ring popped put due to the heat change and the wood contracting? I guess that would cause the same for the top ring as well though.

I know that the Vistalite concert toms had bearing edges. I realize that they do not have re-rings. Just wanted to point out that sometimes they used the same shells and simply did not drill/add lower hardware.

I thought that making it a double headed tom would be the reason for ring removal also.

I don't think there is a mention in any of the posts of "why" the removal.

Just a "how to do it?

But it might be disastrous.

A thin blade, rounded chisel.

Maybe cut it in sections carefully with a dremel.

You need 'special' blades to cut that stuff, or it shatters into splinters like glass. Has to be done by pro's with the right cutting tools. Precision Drum works with Vistalite and I'm sure any acrylic outfit (RCI?) could do the job fairly cheap. It's just one cut and a bearing edge.
