My kid need a drumkit!

Loading...

Hi. Vintage drummers!

I have been searching the web for a drumkit for my son, hi is 6years old and starting with drummer lessons next week.

I'm a drummer myself. Started buying vintage kits in early 00.

My first quality kit was a Ludwig stainless steel... Big and shiny, actually that was my first kit as a drummer in a band in 1994.

Years after that I bought a wmp Rogers with bb lugs. Nicest wmp finish ever.

Then a: gretsch 50's(drum station)

camco, Dw, Ludwig silver sparkle 70s, camco L.A, Ludwig pink oyster( noooo why did I sell you) could actually be a perfect kit for my son, 20,14,12.

Well what I'm getting at is i think i want vintage kit for my son. 20,14,12 is what i have in mind but open for options.

Don't need to be in perfect condition or matching color.

If any one out there have a kit or tips let me know.

Have a nice one!!!

Martin

At his size and age I would gravitate to a smaller well made child kit , as his reach would be more appropriate , for basics any ways , my personal belief is start on a snare only with Gladstone pad to get his chops down that will take a few years for them to developed in the mean time he can play in that 70 kit good luck Gary

April 2nd 1969 scarfed pink champagne holly wood and 65/66 downbeat snare, and , supra same year very minty kit old pies
66/67 downbeat with canister
Super 400 small round knob
1967 super classic obp

once the brass ceases to glitter, and the drum looses its luster, and the stage remains dark, all you have left is the timbre of family.

Gary is right. For a six year old just starting out the kit needs to match his size for now so he doesn't have to reach for anything and so his feet are on the ground when he plays. Ludwig makes a child-size kit you might want to look at. Looks just like a pro kit only for little guys. Add one of your own 16" cymbals in place of the 10" one that comes with the kit and he'll be good to go.

When my oldest son started playing at a couple of years older than your son, we bought him a Mapex Voyager jazz sized kit 10, 12, 14, 18 bass with a wood 14" snare from the local music store. It has a cool retro blue swirl like finish to it. Not sure what the finish was called but the band mates give it a thumbs up.

The bass is punchy and the snare sounds way better than it has the right to given the price.

My son is now 17 and he still prefers to play his kit, along with my 13 year old, even though it sits right next to my standard sized Tamco kit.

I have started playing with a second group and have recently been stealing the little Mapex kit because we do not have a permanent jam space and the Mapex is so easy to throw in the truck and go. I use it as a 4 piece kit.

I guess I liked this size because it fit my son when he was younger and he will not outgrow it as he gets older.
