Leban Drums

I have my eyes on a local stencil set with the name Leban. They look like Pearl drums, but I'm not sure, and don't see their name on the list of stencil brands. Any information on this line?

The finish is a very cool swirly red and grey that I have never seen before; 13, 16 and 22, with an incomplete matching snare.

I think Leban is a 60's stencil brand made by Pearl. Ran across it a couple of times doing some research.

These are the only pictures of Leban drums I have. Yes, just a stencil brand, but I don't see them very often. As you can see, the snare drum did not come with the other drums, as it has a different style of bade and Gretsch copy lugs. Looks pretty cool, though!

I found the kit you're looking at. Very cool finish, but in my opinion not worth the asking price. Seems like it's priced that high because of the rare wrap, but man...I'd expect to see a complete set and in much better shape (i.e. pristine) for that kind of money.

Then again, you were the one who talked down the guy selling that Tempro kit to a more reasonable price, so maybe you can work some more magic (although I still think that guy was following the thread on this site). :)

Vintage kits:
1969 Rogers Holiday - black diamond pearl (20/16/13/12)
196x Star (Lyra/Majestic) - blue sparkle pearl (22/14/13) Restoration Project
1987 Pearl KC-3500 - jet black (22/16/13/12)
Not-so-vintage kits:
2007 Hart Dynamics Professional 6.4 e-kit / Roland TDW-20
Snares:
60s Gretsch 5x14 maple WMP / 68 Ludwig 5x14 Supraphonic / 93 Pearl 3x14 Free Floating brass piccolo / 60s Star (Lyra) 5x14 luan blue sparkle pearl / 87 Pearl 6.5x14 steel

Vater...You're right on all counts. The guy I bought the Tempro set from was following the thread I posted, and he sensed I was interested and within driving distance, so he dropped the price accordingly, specifically to entice me to pull the trigger. It worked. He's a really nice guy, a former collector, and very knowledgeable on vintage drums. I think we'll keep in touch.

The Leban set's owner and I have been dickering back and forth for a couple of weeks. He paid high for the set in a bidding situation and is trying to recoup his money. I understand, as I've been in that position. He's made me a better offer, which I am considering. I'll report back if the deal happens. Truth is, I'm running out of room! I do like the color of the set quite a bit, but the snare drum lacks a strainer, which will be hard to locate I'm afraid, leaving me with drill holes to plug.

Does anyone know what that wrap was called on the Leban set I'm looking at?

Nice, the club date style. I used to shy away from the center lug drums, but now, I've changed my mind.

Particular stencil kit "brands" seem to have particular geographical locations, whereas others seem to be everywhere. The Stewart name (my family name) was used by both Pearl & Star & seems to be everywhere in North America. Up in eastern Canada I see a lot of Stewart, Coronet, Supreme, Bollero (2 L's) & Apollo kits in particular. On the forums I see many people with (for example) Whitehall kits that I never see around here. Kinda OT, but UK drums seemed to have a better run up in Canada, probably due to the amount of pipe bands, before Yamaha & Pearl swallowed that market whole.

1964 Ludwig Champagne Super Classic
1970 Ludwig Blue Oyster Super Classic
1977 Rogers Big R Londoner 5 ebony
1972/1978 Rogers Powertone/Big R mix ebony
60's Ludwig Supersensitive
Pearl B4514 COB snare ( the SC snare)
Pearl Firecracker
PJL WMP maple snare

I had noticed that, but thought it might be just my imagination or coincidence. But it makes sense since you might have regional representatives, chains or dealers pushing a particular stencil name.

Wanted: Pearl President floor tom in Golden Grain wrap and rack tom in Tiger Eye (root beer) wrap.
