Artist or Hollywood Ace?

I posted this in the general topics, oops- it's prolly more appropriate here.....

Hey guys,

I'm trying to I.D. an old snare I've had forever. It's a 5x14 eight lug slingerland with stick saver hoops, maple outer ply, poplar(?) middle ply and mahogany inner ply with maple rings. The strainer was replaced with a p-85 (looks like the one from an acrolite) but I don't think the holes were re-drilled cuz if memory serves the p-85 fits in place of either the zoomatic or the rapid strainer without drilling. Anyway, it has the pre serial number gold and black Niles badge. I'm leaning toward thinking it's the Hollywood Ace, but I'm not positive. Oh, yeah- the rings are the one inch high ones. The wrap was removed before I got it, so I'm thinking of rewrapping it champagne sparkle. Any thoughts?

Yeah, I seem to remember it having one. Also, the date stamp on the inside is smeared, so all I can read is OCT 6 xxx1. It also has a big M stamp.

Bad idea. Slingerland made those natural shells a bit thick. I noticed it on a couple of snares that have traveled through my hands as of late. I wouldn't have believed it, but there is a difference with this manufacturers shells depending on the stain/wrap. If you try to wrap that shell, you WILL have trouble seating the drum heads.

Good point. I used to be an auto painter, so maybe I could do a basecoat/clear that would replicate a sparkle. If it would ruin the value though, I probably won't do it. What model do you think it is?

I think the Rapid Strainer has a two hole vertical footprint, and the Zoomatic has two holes horizontally on top, with a third below them.

That's what I'm seeing on my Student RK ( Rapid ) and my Krupa COB ( Zoomatic ) anyway.

So would that help with your Artist/Ace ID?

It's all about the strainer. Which one is which, I don't remember. I will say, though, that I dig the sound of my Hollywood Ace more than my Radio King...Great drums!!!

Thanks guys! mystery solved. I may never know what year it is- guessing '61. Now I just need to find a rapid strainer for it.
