Found a Slingerland kit.....

I was at the local music store chain, no not GC, and stumbled across a slingerland kit like these, not sure of the year, but definitely 1970's.....double setomatic tom holder, niles black & silver badges. Seems to be finished in red violin stain finish, factory single headed models with re-rings.

Asking price is $550.00 No florr tom legs or spurs, but the double tom holder is there. Needs new heads and a couple of T-rods and claws on the bass from what I saw. Some scuffs to the finish, but no real bad dents or dings.

Is this about what they are worth or have I the chance to score big on these?

I would think that those are priced a bit high being concert toms. Just my two cents.

Starting to think that myself after searching ebay for similar kits. I found a few that sold for less, but they were wrapped finishes not finished wood. They had a beautiful DW late 90's collectors series kit there as well, but that was a grand.....maybe if I traded one of my Ludwig kits in on the DWs.....hmmm.....nah! LOL!

Hey Ludwig-Dude... was this set at the Daddy's in Salem NH by any chance? It seems like were fishing in the same pond. I also found a Slingy set (at the Daddy's) just as you described. Not to worry though, I loathe concert toms.

Why yes it was....right next to that blue lacquer DW kit...lol! Not to worry, I think I'm going to pass on it anyway. Seems like a great piece of drum history, but not very practical. I decided that would get me side-tracked on two other projects I have going....my Leedy&Ludwig "traps" set and the start of a Grestch kit I've wanted for a while.....if I can find some orphan Gretsch RB or early SSB drums that need TLC, no extra holes of course, for REASONABLE $$ I'll start on that instead of picking up this Slingy kit. Unfortunately the sizes I want are traditional bop sizes so I know I'm probably going to pay more than I want to build this kit.

[COLOR="DarkRed"]Nice thing about the Slingy 3-ply concert toms was that they had the bottom edges already cut on 'em, they are just hiding under the metal band. So they are great candidates for being converted into conventional toms....

But...no snare included ? $550 is a little high...not a bad price for a shop, actually, but a little high by maybe $75-100.....

The wife even noticed them (she was with me) and said "Oh, those are pretty." I then pointed out that they were concert toms and that the price was a bit high, IMHO.

Funny - I don't look at drums the way I did when I was in my teens and 20's. Back then all drums were cool (except maybe for those weird looking North or Stacatto drums). Now I see them as potential revenue further down the road - LOL!!

That store does occasionally have a deal or two on used stuff. I got my 6 ply Ludwig kit w/the Supra there for $279.00.

I didn't notice the DW's - I've decided I really don't like the sound of modern drums when compared to the vintage ones. Must be getting old :)

Yeah, well I went to check on them at lunch today and the price went up by a grand!! DOH.....they can keep them! LOL! The DW's that is......
