Stewart Drum Set Find

First of all, I think you guys are on to something over here. I don't frequent this part of the forum very often, but thought you might like to see what I found Yesterday. I have not had much interest in MIJ drums but loved my Whitehall set I got for Christmas in 1968, and really learned how to play on that set. Have not found anything really, or made a nice drum score in 2 or 3 years ,but was recently looking on the local CL the last two weeks, and Thursday I see this listing for a Stewart drum set and some cymbals. I could see one Avedis Zildjian on the top pile, and the drums looked like a pearl wrap, so called and went to see them yesterday morning. She was asking $450 for everything. I went for the cymbals, and there was one nice 14" A Zildjian crash and a pair of 12" UFIP est.1847 stamp on them and a UFIP est. 1847 stamp 14" sizzle, and 18" ? Can't find a stamp on it but it sounds horrible. Anyway, she just said make a offer and I figured the drums looked ok and she just wanted the stuff gone. So I made a rediculous offer and she took it. She said they were 1966 and she got the stuff at a estate sell years ago. The foil badges just say "Stewart" and "JAPAN" . The drums are 14'x22", 16"x16", 9"x13", and 5"x14" snare. All parts except the spade tom holder were there. I cleaned them up, polished the hoops and lugs. Wood bass drum hoops with the inlay are fine, nice rerings in all drums, 3 ply, drums in round, snare strainer works flawlessly, wrap is tight and in pristine condition.I oiled all the threads, and screw parts. I reassembled the floor tom first and when I tuned it up I was amazed at the tone, sustain, sound. They had decent Remo Ambassadors on then that I scrubbed clean. No dents or much wear. I thought to myself, "if the rest of the drums sound this good I will be very happy. And they did ! I had a PS3 I put on the bass batter and the light head that came with them on the reso with a felt strip. I was very meticulous in tuning them , making sure the head's were evenly tensioned. I feel I could play these out on a pro gig. Do you guys use yours on gigs much? I am just stunned at the beauty of the wraps on this set. I took these pics this morning in natural sunlight in my living room with no flash, or color enhancement. Just a little sharpening. Ahhh the smell of 3-in-one in the morning. Any more info on the set or cymbals would be appreciated. Not sure what I am going to do with these.

Thanks Wayne, I posted this earlier this morning and I don't think the link worked so I uploaded them to photo bucket, and posted that link, so I gues it worked. I am hoping I can get some additional info on the drums. They actually sound good enough to take out on a pro gig. I am wondering how many actually play their MIJ sets out live.

Only complaint I ever had or heard about was the snare drum with MIJ kits. It sounds a little weak to me, but I'm referring to the old woodies, the metal ones cut through better but can be harsh.

Take them out for any gig? FOR SURE. Just bring the good snare and cymbals and no one will be able to tell any difference. In fact the toms and bass drum are preferred by a lot of players

Was thinking the same thing Wayne. Bass drum and toms sound plenty good. Snare is not bad but not quite there. Take one of my high end snares and should be fine.

I have a set of Crest drums, 12/14/20 in black diamond pearl that I have been using on small space and quieter gigs for years. They were made by Pearl. The previous owner treated them well and installed modern spurs on the bass drum, and was smart enough to reinforce them from the inside. I paid $120 for the set from this guy in Stroudsburg, PA. As I was carrying them out to the car, he started going, "I never should have sold these for $120!" I said, "I made you an offer and you accepted. Goodbye." Talk about seller's remorse!

I will pass these drums along to my grandson when he gets older, along with the little Mapex Voyager kit sitting in the corner collecting dust.

Hi Bob, you have a pic of those Crest drums ? Black diamond Pearl looks nice. Never had a set of that wrap before I found the Stewart's.

You got a great looking kit and the BDP shines! I have a Stewart snare in the same wrap that I got from DrumFX here on the VDF and love the look of it. Great job!

I have a similar Stewart kit, early 60's, same sizes, re-rings, etc. I've used it on live gigs, and some sessions as well. Sounds amazing.
