1920's Ludwig and Ludwig bass drum with factory artist painted head signed "Ludwig"
There is a string of modern white Christmas mini-lights to illuminate the
painted image on the inside .
'I know these particular lights are obviously non-original
but the concept of back lighting the image is most likely original
I have read that most of these old bass drums used lighting just to warm the calfskins
Here's my recently acquired late 30s WFL set in sparkling green pearl! I posted this in the "image gallery," but I figured I might as well post them here as well.

Cool drum! I have the same drum with gold hardware and the same painting.
Hello Kurt
Thanks for the reply
I took the liberty of re-posting your bass alongside my own
just to try and compare the details in the two paintings

My '96 kit, 4-ply shells. I bought it used at Guitar Center (sorry) about 3 years ago. It was 12, 13, 16 & 22, like new w/original heads. Date stamp on interiors was 3/96. About a year later, at a different music store (locally owned), i saw what looked like a new 6 1/2" supra. Turns out, it was used, also like new with original heads. And the date stamp was 3/96. I'm thinking that the original owner sold the toms & bass to GC, and the snare to the local store (they're about 2 miles apart). The configuration as a 5-piece corresponds to a kit in the 1994 catalog, with the supra snare. The 12 & 13 toms had RIMS mounts from the factory, with no mounting holes in the shells. I originally had it set up as a 5-piece, but the toms were just too high because of the extra depth. I decided to make it a 4-piece with the 12" tom on the original bass drum mount, but on a floor stand, not on the bass drum, as you can see in the photos. The tom mount fit exactly into the base section of a dw cymbal stand. I put the top tier of the cymbal stand off to the side of that with multi-clamps, which provided better balance for the whole thing.
