First layer of poly, with Purple, Gold and a touch up of Red. These do not do it any justice. The purple is not as prevalent as the pix show it to be.

These are GREAT for on the cheap. Nicely done.

Actually, the purple is as obnoxious as it looks...note to self, don't use purple unless you want purple drums....LoLoLoLo

Second coat of poly with Pink sparkle added. I ran out half way around the floor tom, so Monday I get another bottle of glitter. These are really starting to take on some life.You get some of the wood grain, then when you change angles to the light, it sparkles. Next round gets a tiny touch of red and silver, or gold.

[COLOR="DarkRed"]On Japanese kits, I almost always make the edges sharper, not rounder...wanna let the heads vibrate more freely, reduce the surface area contact with the shell.....

Well, it's an interesting outcome so far....but I have to admit that it doesn't change my mind about Luan not being a good candidate for stain.

Hey Jaye-That bass drum was refit. Look at it. Look down the post and tell me what kind of T-rod that is. The bass was re-drilled to fit the Pearl hardware. I am getting queasy about it. I think it was a Slingerland shell, before someone made it a Pearl. Isn't that a Swivo-period T-rod? Too bad.

HI All, That t-rod in question is a 60s japanese made by pearl but not from pearl drums--T-rod came off many names of drums[made by pearl and inported to the u.s.a.] to many to list..the bass lugs what should be with the t-rod are like slingerlands lugs rounded with a ridge on top of lug if i recall right..I do have the t-rods that you are looking for and i also think i have the collars ....But i will have to check...mikey

The lugs that were re-fit to this bass are Pearl. This shell is NOT a Pearl shell. It has been re-fit from another set. Look at all the extra holes. It is most noticeable at the tom holder. Look down a few lines and you can see where the drilling was done for the lugs. When I took off the ugly, black re-wrp, I found a piece of gold sparkle wrap holding onto the grommet. None of the other shells had ever been redone. I am almost certain this bass drum is a Slingerland shell, and the T-rods were kept from the re-fit. I recall the guy telling my that at some point at a party the Pearl bass had been crushed by "that drunk guy we all hate getting too close to the stage area". So they took something "out of storage" and put it to use. Is the interior paint correct for a Slingerland? Or is it something else, this is a 3 ply shell,don't forget.

Last round of sparkle. Next will be a final coat of poly, and then the hardware goes back on!

I like this. I would have to do another four or five layers on that before putting about five layers of clear. It would give it even more depth. You are doing a great job on those. VERY cool work.

Hey, would a really light bit of color added to the clear put you off? That would give it even more depth. Mind you, not much color...just a tiny bit. That could be cool. What do you think?
