1970's Gretsch Jazzette kit question

Loading...

Did Gretsch ever use chrome bass drum hoops on their Jazzette kit in the 1970's? The kit has the SS1 badges, sizes are 18, 14, 12 with a COB snare. Kit looks all original to me except for the chrome bass drum hoops. Sorry, not sure why the pictures loaded sideways? They are straight on my computer. I just tried clicking on them twice and the came out on a new page straight.

Hey are there no Gretsch experts around to comment?

The answer is YES. Hard to tell from the pics if those are Gretsch or not. What is the width of the hoop and what is the width of the channel for the hoop wrap inlay?

Never play it the same way once.

Thanks for responding orangemi. I bought the kit out of BC, three provinces over from Manitoba and the seller was kind enough to deliver them to one of my sisters who lives in Mission, BC. I won't be out to actually lay eyes on the kit until August 27th. I was hoping to find catalogs from the 1970 to 1978 and check to see if the 18" bass drums ever came with chrome hoops. N luck the few catalogs I did find show wood hoops. I was hoping either a original owner or someone who purchased an kit from the original owner would be able to verify? I would be surprised to learn a USA made Gretsch kit would have chrome bass drum hoops back in the 70's.

These hoops can be clearly seen on the Concert Rock and Broadkaster II kits in the 1977 catalog. Pictured below is a 100% original kit with the COS hoops.

Your kit looks 100% original to me.

Thanks orangemi. Would that place all the bass drums from 1977 including the 18" with COS hoops? Or just certain models? Is this the first year for COS hoops? I factory ordered a new Gretsch kit with a Walnut exterior in the summer of '79. Sizes were 22,16,14,13. The bass drum hoops were wood and matched the stain on the kit.

I think you'll find that they were used on all sizes as I have seen 20's and 18's with COS hoops. I'm not sure there is definitive info on what years in the 70's they were used. The tom mount on your set puts it in a very narrow window...

What window is that? I was thinking early 70's. The seller was a keyboard player and the brother of the original owner who has passed away. He had borrowed the kit for his son to learn how to play drums in 2002. The kit was sitting unused for the last 10 years and with his brother's passing he decided to sell the kit. He stated his brother bought the kit in 1970, but he might be off on that? Also he said the kit was all original except some newer heads. The floor tom legs were another clue the kit was an older model. Progressive Jazz I believe which could have been ordered with an 18" bass drum.

The 1971 catalog shows the bass drum hoops are wood.

The four bolt 4942-1 Rail Consolette along with the 4820 Diamond Plate on the TT of your kit were only used from 1971-1976. That should help provide a date range for it's production. This is also within the time frame during which the COS hoops are believed to have been used, along with the standard wood hoops. Relying solely on Gretsch catalogs for definitive proof of almost anything is always a gray area. Looks to me that all your kit needs is some Black Nitron wrap in the hoop inlays and you'll have an excellent original example.
