Beater Mod

Loading...

This may be of interest to no one and I didn't do the greatest job either but...

If you go to buy a BD beater, the nice compact ones are usually pricey compared to the budget brands. The latter are often too big/tall, a little more weight than I want to be swinging on the pedal.

So, since the cheap ones are also usually held in place on the shaft with a nyloc nut at the top, you simply take the beater off the shaft, use a serrated kitchen knife to cut a disc out of the middle, and re-install. To fill the space left by the missing disc, I cut a cymbal sleeve to act as a spacer below the beater.

For a bit of pizazz, add a layer of coloured felt to the middle. You don't have to cut a disc of felt - just sandwich it between the beater halves and trim the excess close to the beater once it's tightened on there.

I'm extremely happy with the results on mine [pics].

Nice. I guess you could get really creative and also look at putting a thin section of harder or softer felt to change the characteristics of the beater sound.

That looks cool, but I'm a little confused.

What do you mean by "cut a disc out of the middle"? Does that mean making it thinner horizontally, so you have two smaller pieces rather than one thick piece? I would assume so by you needing the cymbal sleeve to act as a spacer.

Also, the red felt is put in between the two layers, back where the now two thinner pieces are joined up?

Looks cool and old school, but if you could clarify a little, that would help.

Thanks.

Thanks dudes! Vyacheslav I think you pretty much got it - I reduced the height of the beater by removing a thick section from the middle, which I then replaced with a thin bit of felt. The hard part is making a straight cut.

First pic shows what I was working with, probably a Stagg or whatever, second shows the inspiration.

Thanks Lynn!

I was browsing the NASCAR site, and this [pic 1] got me thinking about using these RC wheels [pic 2] as BD beaters. Probably kind of expensive and who knows how they'd perform re-purposed as beaters but it sure would look neat! :)

You're welcome! It'd be neat if you could make that work.
