This may be of interest to no one and I didn't do the greatest job either but...
If you go to buy a BD beater, the nice compact ones are usually pricey compared to the budget brands. The latter are often too big/tall, a little more weight than I want to be swinging on the pedal.
So, since the cheap ones are also usually held in place on the shaft with a nyloc nut at the top, you simply take the beater off the shaft, use a serrated kitchen knife to cut a disc out of the middle, and re-install. To fill the space left by the missing disc, I cut a cymbal sleeve to act as a spacer below the beater.
For a bit of pizazz, add a layer of coloured felt to the middle. You don't have to cut a disc of felt - just sandwich it between the beater halves and trim the excess close to the beater once it's tightened on there.
I'm extremely happy with the results on mine [pics].
