Ludwig Mod Orange

Hello Everyone! Today I scored a set of Ludwig Mod Orange on Craigslist! I'll just say that I got the deal of the century. 14x22, 16x16, 9x13, and a 5 1/2x14 Supra. Those are all stamped around May of 69. Also with the set are 8x12, 10x14, and 12x15 concert toms from the early 70's. Original owner had bought the Super Classic, then added the three concert toms a year or so later. At least that is the story I got.

The Supra has very little pitting. Missing bottom hoops on the 13 and 16. Front bass drum hoop is gone. Concert toms have L-Arm mounts. Clear interiors on all. The wrap is faded, has some nicks and dings, but all in all... not bad at all. The bass drum has a rail mount that has been moved, but has a second one to add on? Further investigation on the rail mount.

Got a couple atlas tube leg cymbal stands, spur lok HH stand, a single braced atlas snare stand, and an atlas tube leg double tom stand. Also an absolute ton of other modern hardware.

I'll add some photos asap.

Very little. The concert toms have a little more than the others. I actually prefer the faded version.

They look great!!

This wrap is on my bucket list...I was close to scoring a 20/12/14 set in this wrap last year, but, the seller and I couldn`t agree to a final price...Too bad!! Instead, I scored a Sonor Centennial set in metallic pewter!!

Cheers

The 13 was missing the bottom hardware. At least I thought so. The guy gave me a grocery bag with a cowbell and some clamps in it. Opened it up and there was a bag of lugs and another complete rail mount! Just need some hoops and heads for the bottoms of the 13 and 16 and a hoop, claws, t rods, and a head for the bass. A friend that lurks around in here has a repro inlay I can have.

Has anyone ever used plastic polish on Ludwig Wrap?

MHC,

Great score !

I would recommend taking all the hardware off and then using Novus 2 and a buffing wheel to clean it up, I find the ones that attach to a hand held drill on medium to low speed will get rid of the majority of scratches. You may need to give it 2-rounds of the Novus 2 (all available on Amazon). From there use Novus 1 to shine it up then 2- coats of Carnuba wax with a buffer. That will bring it right back to life. (take a look at the post I did for bringing WMP back to life as I recommend that approach compared to the rest in the post for this kit)

For the lugs, etc. Dismantle them and take the springs and washers/screws out and set them aside. Then soak the casings and tension rods in vinegar for about an hour, then scrub them down using aluminum foil (crumpled up) to get rid of the haze and it will also get rid of most of the pitting. I would also follow up with Mothers chrome polish on the lugs and rods to get rid of any residual oxidation. From there, a coat of carnuba way to keep it from oxidizing again. Post some pictures when you are done please, what a great kit !

This wrap and kit is also on my bucket list.

Great find! That's quite a set. The Supra should be a 5" or a 6.5". It appears to be the 5" from what I can see. I use Novus 2 and Novus 1 on my wrapped shells. Have always done it by hand though. Works great. Enjoy those.

Nice Job! I have a mod orange super classic that is stamped March 26 1969. I was lucky to find a matching 14x14 from 1968. Those are going to be awesome!

Bum wrap drum company is making a pretty nice looking mod orange and you might be able to get some of the wrap to make a matching front hoop. Good luck!
